Are female seeds a rip off? There just no way of knowing if a seed is female.

I've study agi/bio science in high school and college.There just no 100% way to tell.Other then a cloning a plant.

yep they are 99% feminized or something like that , there is chemicals that cam be used or herme plants produce feminized seed

Femmed seeds are made through forcing a female plant to give male flowers and therefore produce seeds that are genetically female.

They do seem to be somewhat more prone to give hermies than regular seeds though.

I don't think they are a rip off, but to me, they pointless.
I suppose for people with limited space, they have a use, but
really, how much space do seedlings take up, until you can
sex them ? Not a lot.

I suppose its personal taste.

To me, its pointless to feminise seeds.

Budmanman; It is not 100% cuz the genes for creating male gametes are present in all plants, it is just not expressed in all.

The key is a reputable source. The way it works is this: plants are stressed through all means possible; light cycles, heat, drought, etc, and plants that do not go hermi are selected. These genes of these plants do not have expressive male genes. The plant is sprayed with hormones to elicit male flowers and the pollen is used to pollinate another such strongly female plant. The progeny has no expressive male genes.

If you do it to any old plant you will be more likely to get hermis.

Ok, here we go again.

Take a bunch of plants that are flowering and start stressing them, light, water, yadda yadda. What your trying to do is force hermie floweries. Now here is where me and Soma fight like cats and dogs. He uses those flowers. Myself the plants that show hermies under stress get chucked.
Now the plants that don't show hermies under stress get the feminized treatment of sts. The reason I use those plants is that they naturaly fight off the hermie trate and give almost 97% hermie free seeds. Soma can't come close to saying that.

Here is the sts treatment used.

Preparation of STS:

First, a stock solution is made. It consists of two parts (A and :cool: that are initially mixed separately, then blended together. Part A is ALWAYS mixed into part B while stirring rapidly. Use distilled water; tap water may cause precipitates to form.

Wear gloves while mixing and using these chemicals, and mix and use in a properly ventilated area. A mask will prevent the breathing of any dust, which is caustic. STS is colorless and odorless, and poses minimal health risks if used as described here. Note that silver nitrate and STS can cause brown stains upon drying, so spray over newspaper and avoid spilling.

Part A: .5 gram silver nitrate stirred into 500ml distilled water
Part B: 2.5 grams sodium thiosulfate (anhydrous) stirred into 500ml distilled water

The silver nitrate dissolves within 15 seconds. The sodium thiosulfate takes 30-45 seconds to dissolve.

The silver nitrate solution (A) is then mixed into the sodium thiosulfate solution (B) while stirring rapidly. The resulting blend is stock silver thiosulfate solution (STS).

This stock solution is then diluted at a ratio of 1:9 to make a working solution. For example, 100ml of stock STS is added to 900ml of distilled water. This is then sprayed on select female plants.

Both the stock STS and the working solution should be refrigerated after use, as well as the powdered chemicals, to avoid activity loss.

What it does is inhibiting ethylene the hormone in plants that tell them to make female flowers. Badda bing male flowers. Each treatment is good for about 3 weeks when stopped they go back to normal flowering.

edit: by the way, I love the mouse in your signature, I'm getting a degree in molecular genetics and physiology and bio/tech overlap is my fav. part of the field

I agree with Nast here. I've had decent success rate with feminized seeds but never 100%.
