How many here use them? Are they good for keeping contams out? Better or worse than pillow stuffing in the hole? Advantages - Disadvantages? And last but not least personal experiences.
All would be verry helpfull information.. Thanks

You should also be able to put a nice layer of polyfill between a plastic lid and a metal cap with matching holes drilled in each.

I use a filter disk under the jar cap & a double coffee filter rubber banded over the cap. Works for me. Your results may differ. SixTango

Suave makes these flat, circular cotton balls now. They lqqk like they would work; devise some way to replace them if they get snaky....Like yo maw.
I use poly fill. Fair air exchange; excellent if you screw up with having high humidity at first.

I know this sounds a little crazzy, but my wife just had a baby and I ran out of expensive filtration paper so I grabed one of her pads that she put's over her big fat milky's that she won't let me play with, to catch leaks it worked great and is the perfect size for your jar's and you can get a hundred of them for about five dollars..

So, just for the hell of it, to see if coffee filters by themselves would work. The Raccoon tried some grain & bird seed jars with plastic lids with two 1/4 inch hole & 3 coffee filters under the lid & 3 over the lid, wrapped tight to the jars with rubber bands.
When removed from the still very warm PC, the coffee filters dry out in a minute or 2 from the heat. The jars shook fine & there was no damage to the paper filters inside.
The Coon removed the outer filters & innoc'ed through one of the holes, taped that hole over, swabbed the lid top & inside the already used outer coffee filters & replaced them back on the jars.
He also tried several grain to grain & bird seed transfers with only coffee filters, presterilized with the jars & grains. All of them turned out fine & colonized quickly. So, at least IMHO they work fine .
But, the Coon would rather be safe than sorry. So he will continue to use filter material under the jar lid. He has always used double or triple coffee filters to COVER the jar lids & held them to the jars tightly with thick rubber bands.
