Is sugar a salt?
    #6879438 -

This might sound like a really stupid fuckin question, but is it?

Until the 20th century, reality was everything humans could touch, smell, see,
and hear.
Since the initial publication of the charged electromagnetic spectrum, humans
learned that what they can touch, smell, see, and hear... is less than one
millionth of reality.

No, it's not a salt...it's a carbohydrate.

Basically a hydrocarbon with a lot of OH groups added to it.

More technically, table sugar (sucrose) is a disaccharide made from glucose and fructose bound together.

A salt is defined as a compound made of a metal and non metal... Sugar is a complex carb.

I heard in chem class one time that all salts taste "salty". Anybody know if that's true or not?

I believe so...at least all the ones I have tasted are "salty".

There's a lot of salts you wouldn't catch me tasting...like Tl2SO4 for instance. In fact, just keep all those salts with a higher atomic number metal away from me!

Edit - I just looked at the wiki article for thallium sulfate, and it says that it is tasteless...so I guess not all salts are "salty"...

Edit #2 - and I just found out that a lot of lead salts are sweet tasting! They actually used them in candy and to sweeten wine. Well thats one way to go...

Organic chem is a bitch! But all my favorite molecules are organic, well most of em!

Trendal be right, simple sugar = glucose, I try to stay away from sucrose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup,, and artificals, aspartame is horrible for you....

lead salts? hmm, safe i suppose, just like the chrloine in sucralose.

salts are defined as the product of neutralization of acids and bases

since sugar is a hydrocarbon with OH groups (carboxylic acid) and water is always present with some acid and base, sugar is only a salt in the loosest sense

there are plenty of hydrocarbon salts, our bodies couldn't metabolize sugars without them
