Tell me...the agar formula uses 2 grams of flour...what is that for? I have a copy of Stamet's book and the formula given on page 90 for MYPA doesn't include flour. Seems like that would act as a stifening agent. Does it do anything else? Unless it is suppose to accelerate "jump off". I know that I add 4 grams of powdered rye grain to mine to gain this advantage.

But you named yours MYPA+. Is the flour the "+"? My edition was released in 1993...is yours a newer edition?

Anyway, cake flour is essentially very fine wheat flour. Starting on page 91 of GGMM under "Nitrogen & Carbohydrate Supplements" Paul writes of adding "2 gram rye or wheat flour." The text above says "To prevent a strain from becoming media specific, the following compounds are added to 1 liter of MEA or PDA at various intervals, often in combinations.

I chose cake flour over rye because I can find it ground extremely fine--cake flour is much finer than regular flours such as rye flour. However, if I had a professional grind, I would have used extremely fine ground finch seed instead, but wheat flour should do. I believe by adding wheat flour, you not only reduce the jump off time but also lessen your chances of the mycelium becoming media specific.

Man do I feel stupid. I knew better than that. I guess it was late or I had smoke in my eyes or the "Gold Medal" threw me...But you are right...you can't get a better agar mix, the flour and peptone makes it superior to anything I've used before. I use Brewer's Yeast that I get from a home Beer making store. What type do you use?

I put pen to paper and I don't see how your selling it so cheep. Fungi Perfecti's agar agar is rather expensive to use. I get mine much cheaper locally and would still have trouble offering the complete mix for that price. Do you get a discount on the agar agar?

I think your doing a good thing here. Most people seem to be a little intimidated when it comes to agar...but to me it is one of the most enjoyable phases of the hobby right along with seeing the first pinn set and harvesting the first flush. I wish you much business.

I am using nutritional yeast I found in a local health food grocery store. As for your question about price, it's kind of funny you mention it. I have absolutely nothing to hide, so let me prove that I'm just breaking even here. Here's what things costs me:

-Agar agar from Fungi Perfecti is $63.75 a pound (w/shipping) if you mention the Internet page error ($5 less than catalog)
-High quality light tan brewer's malt sugar is $3.35 a pound in bulk.
-Nutritional yeast is $4.60 a pound.
-SoftaSilk Flour is $1.10 a pound.
-Peptone is about 11 cents a gram in bulk from my lab source.

Consider the total cost to send 1/4lb (113.5g) of mix:
$7.08 for 50.44g Fungi Perfecti Agar Agar
$0.37 for 50.44g Malt Sugar
$0.01 for 5.04g Softasilk Wheat Flour
$0.05 for 5.04g Nutritional Yeast
$0.28 for 2.52g Peptone
$1.21 for Shipping of 4.8oz package
$0.75 for the specially padded envelope
$0.02 for the paper to print my instructions

TOTAL is $9.77

See, it can be done! Hell, I almost make an entire quarter profit! WHOA! Just kidding.

I never doubted you for a moment. I thought you were selling it below cost or had a deal on bulk agar agar or something. But you are right on the money. Your actually making yours for a few pennies less than it costs me to make it myself but your also shipping yours for that price. Its obvious your doing it to help people...who would work so hard for less than a quarter? Too cool.
