trying to track down a bug - need your help!

ok, so a few people have been reporting multiple copies of the same smiley showing up in their "my smileys" menu. i've been trying to track this down & have definitely seen that the problem exists, but for the life of me, can't get it to replicate. so my request for all of you (who have the time, wish to expend the effort, and care to pay attention about this sort of thing) is as follows: if you suddenly notice, after doing something (making a new post, quick reply, regular reply, edit a post, send a pm, reply to a pm, create a rating, edit a rating, i think that's it?) that included a smiley that this smiley now appears twice in your custom menu, if you could briefly detail what you did that caused this and what smiley it is, either in a post here or via PM to me. this way i can hopefully find some trend of what causes this, and thus fix it.

as well, if anybody has double copies of the same smiley in their custom menu and are irked by this, send me a PM with the smiley in question (and a note explaining that it is duplicated in your custom menu, so i dont just think you happen to like some smiley so much that you just wanted to PM it to me :lol: ) and i'll manually repair it for you.

i could just make a bandaid that would check each time you use a smiley and fix this problem if it occurs, but that is cheap hacking and i'd much rather figure out why this occurs and stop it from doing so, instead of just correcting the problem every time it pops up.

anyway, nobody should feel at all obligated to be on the lookout for this, but if you really want to sleuth around and try to replicate this bug, or if you just happen to notice that it has suddenly occured, a PM my way will help me figure this out all the faster.

Krishna I wrote a script to remove duplicate custom smileys, it's fixmysmileys.php. There were 1274 cases of dupes so it's not that isolated. At first I thought it could be smileys with two codes, like :) vs. :smile: But your script goes by the image name. So then I thought it could have been caused by running mySQL with --low-priority-updates, which I recently disabled. When you store the custom smiley data it looks like you do it for each one in a post, one after another. So that would require the previous update or insert to be complete in case of duplicates so it could increment the count. But if that's what was happening, you'd expect to see one instance of the smiley which was used once, and a second instance which was used an arbitrary number of times. But I was seeing duplicates where one was used 34 times and one was used 35, for instance. So I dunno. Your code looks okay to me. Good luck!
