Ethical dilemma
    #6799049 -

I intend no disrespect, but recent developments have reminded me of an important ethical dilemma, and I wonder where you guys stand.

We've all heard the terrible news from Virginia tech, the horrible spree killing that took place.

Imagine you were given the chance to do something about it. Would you? Ofcourse you would. But there is a catch.

Suppose you were given the opportunity to travel back in time and shoot the killer before he fired his first shot. This would mean that you would prevent all the killings from occurring - but also that you would be arrested for murder, and since the horrible spree killing was entirely prevented, it seems to others like you shot an innocent man.

There is no clever way around this: either you go back in time, shoot the would-be serial killer and be tried for murder, or you do not intervene and let it happen as it did.

.
What would you do?
You may choose only one

I would go back in time, but not shoot him, that just gives all the "anti-gun" assholes more ammo.

Nope, that's one of those "clever things" my post clearly said were not an option.

This is ridiculous. If we could go back in time to find this guy, why would you have to SHOOT and KILL him? Couldn't you just catch him off guard, hogtie him, take his weapons, ammo, and any other evidence of an upcoming shooting on campus to the police?

Because thats the nature of the dilemma. If we could just jump him at night while he sleeps and lock him in a closet for a day, then there wouldn't be anyone unwilling to lend a hand.

Its the dilemma of actually killing someone who has done nothing wrong yet ("would you kill baby hitler" dilemma) and be punished for it as a hero in your own head that makes the dilemma a hard one.

But it's a dilemna that could never exist because there would always be better alternatives.

Bah!

Since I could go back in time... I'd just cockblock his dad.

I bet you loved multiple choice tests at school

The dilemma also has a whiff of Donnie Darko - kinda sacrificing yourself for others who would never know you saved them.

So far most choose to not get in harm's way. Even if you choose to not act, you are intervening, as you had a choice to prevent it.

I'm no Timelord...I'd let everyone die. Sounds like shit? Well it is :smirk:

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Yes, I'd definitely do it. The catch is I'd also kill myself. I'd rather die with dignity knowing that I prevented a mass murder than live in prison for the rest of my life.

I think the question is meant to mean:

Would you live in prison with dignity for the rest of your life? :smirk:
