Oryx and Crake - a novel by Margaret Atwood
    #6782206 -

Just got done reading Oryx and Crake last night and I can't recommend it enough. I don't choose my own books anymore - I've developed a rapport with a guy who works at the Shakespeare and Co. bookstore near me and I let him pick what I'm going to read next. He hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Last time I walked in there he handed me this book, Oryx and Crake. He's a huge Philip K. Dick fan, and after reading Oryx and Crake I can see why he enjoyed it so much - Dick would have loved this novel. It's a cautionary tale, a Brave New World-esque warning of a world that could be, of paths we're already walking down, of science gone wild in the name of vanity and immortality.

This is my #1 book recommendation of 2007 thus far.

Noted.

Duly, of course.

i thought it was pretty good, and way better than the handmaidens tale, that is a bit more famous of a book by her.

my +1 story - i met her at the gothenburg book fair a few years ago, and listened to this lecture she gave, mostly about insects and the prospects of a post-apocalyptic world. she really came across as a D&D nerd combined with a newagey/mayan calendar nerd and a little hint of small town canadian thrown in  nice woman, tho

Everyone tells me to read that one, and also "The Assassin" I think another one of hers is called...she's quite prolific. I've never read anything else by her.

had never even heard of her until i saw her speak; then read those two novels within a few months afterwards, and haven't heard much about her for a good couple of years now. not sure if she is still writing/coming out with anything new?

Oryx and Crake

I think she still puts out short stories all the time for fiction anthologies.

I just bought J.G. Ballard's Concrete Island and a collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories to follow it up with.

Atwood to Ballard? You'll go insane reading all that crazy stuff

pulled this ballard off of wiki:

"Each one of us is as old as the entire biological kingdom, and our bloodstreams are tributaries of the great sea of its total memory."

I think he likes all that NewAgeyNeo-Pyschedelic stuff.

It just makes me want to read an instruction manual, or something. Just to get something factual and sensical into my brain to balance things out...

I balance it out with the consumption of outrageous amounts of baseball statistics.

I'll probably pick this book up.

I dont think we have anything near the same taste in literature, but I'm always open to good suggestions.

I would just like to add that this is very strange, with a thread named "Oxy and Crack--Two Novel Compounds" on the second page of the pub...

Good man.  Lovecraft is the shit.  Laugh at his terrible dialogue but cower at his psychedelic frights.

I'll be sure to check out Oryx and Crake when I finish Cat's Cradle and Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates.
