Why drug abusers piss me off.
    #6670600 -

This is sort of a rant to vent, so I apologize if I offend.

Ok, let me first make a distinction. To me there is a difference between drug users (people who respect the psychoactives they take in - they aren't addicts, they aren't people just looking to get "fucked up" - they're just people who are educated enough to expand their own consciousness) and drug abusers (people who have to smoke every night because its become an addiction, or a crutch - people who will do any drug that comes their way regardless of what it may or may not do, and have no care to learn).

Case in point, I live in a rental house with 2 other people. I personally begged for months that people not smoke tobacco in the house because a) its stipulated on our lease, b) it makes the house smell distasteful, c) I lost my father because of tobacco, and d) people who are inebriated tend to ash wherever they feel like. After months of begging, I gave up. The smoker in the house insisted that it was ok to smoke in the house with all of his friends because "the world is slanted against smokers" and "nothing bad will happen." After months of being the bad guy, I just couldn't take being ignored anymore. Note that I don't have a problem with other substances, I just dislike tobacco in the house (I have an ash can outside that I clean), and I don't like going against things I have given my word on - like the lease (its a thing called integrity).

So I gave up. Well, about a week ago we got notice from our landlord that they'd been contacted by the neighbors because the smell of smoke was seeping through the walls and ventilation system. If they got another complaint, we're out. So, instead of refraining, the smoker decided to move to the far wall of the house to smoke. Good, right?

Well, today, driving home, I got another phone call. We're homeless. They got a 3rd call from the neighbors. I haul ass to the landlord's place and talk to them face to face, explaining that I don't know whats going on, but I know *I* am not smoking. They tell me that I'm the oldest, so I should try to maintain order. I tell them I work 14 hours a day, and tell them to call the other housemates. Finally, I manage to get them to give us one final chance.

I came home tonight, and told everyone no smoking in the house, period. Cigs, pot, pcp, whatever. Smoke it elsewhere. So, instead of understanding, I get pleading, and bargaining. "Well, let us just smoke pot here tonight," or "can't we just smoke in the side room?" or "That's great but you got 6 people here who wanna smoke." So, I simply responded that the line has been drawn. Then the insults start, from my housemates and their friends. They tell me I'm worrying too much, and that I'm a little bitch about things, etc.

Well fuck them, they're not the one who got told he was homeless, and they're not the one who has a home on the line.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I can't lose my house - if I lose it, then I have to leave college, I have to quit both of my jobs, I'll lose my car...

So please, does anyone have any advice? I'm sorry if this didn't make too much sense, I'm kind of shakey, and really goddamned nervous. I'm considering just rolling over on my housemates - someone who's willing to put me at risk is NOT a friend I need. I just don't know what to do. Its just pathetic to me that drug abusers have to get their gratification... they've become so obsessed with their intake of whatever drugs it may be, that they'd be willing to put their own home on the line to smoke just once. Even worse, they'd be willing to put other people on the line.

what does this have to do with drug users?

It sounds like you have got some dumb fucking self centered roomates. Tell them that the world doesn't revolve around a their smoking habbit and two it's downright disgusting to smoke inside. It ruins walls, curtains, furniture. Smoking cigarettes is nasty enough but indoors SHOULD draw the line.

Good luck man...seriously.

That sucks that they dont give a shit.

Install smoke detectors in the house so if they start smoking it'll go off, mabey even right next to them, hidden.

Start getting more aggressive.

Somebody smokes, hit them with a fucking big stick and tell them if they smoke inside the household again, it'll be a harder hit.

I was considering that - we've got a bunch of baseball bats around the house. But even with a bat, I'm not gonna take a chance with a 6 on 1 brawl. Pretty much both of my housemates dislike me at this point, and their friends don't respect me. I'm not 'alpha male' enough to gain their respect either.

Now they're smoking pot in the back yard because I asked them to not smoke inside. God damn... I feel like I can't win.

I'm considering talking to the neighbors tomorrow, and then calling the landlord and explaining that I talked to both sides, and that I don't smoke. Then tell them that if they try to terminate my lease when for smoking when I'm not a smoker (and haven't been the one smoking), they can speak to my lawyer when I countersue for breach of contract.

Maybe that'll keep my ass safe.

Yeah.. its reminding me why I prefer machines over people.

Machines aren't moody, they don't try to act tough, and if they piss you off you attack them with an axe.

Well, I guess that last thing counts for people too...

put an ad in the paper looking for roommates.
contact your landlord and tell him whats going on.
termination of tenancy CAN be applied to specific individuals on the lease.

fuck them! they are not your friends, and FUCK what they can do to you in the social scene.... or fuck yourself, your choice.

As far as getting a lawyer for breach of contract against your landlord, proving you are not the one smoking would be a tough bit to do. You either need to become the "alpha male" and tell them to stop being little bitches to nicotine or you need to prove to the landlord your roommates are fuckheads. Wouldn't they be homeless as well if this shit doesn't stop?

Yeah, hence drug abuse. They care more about the fact that they want to smoke than they care about practical things, like the roof over their head.

As for proving it, a lot of businesses drug test for tobacco use now, I'd be willing to submit to one. Hell, I don't even have weed in my system right now, so bring on the cup! I mean, the landlords have seen how I work, they know that I'm never home. I don't think they'd risk the fight. Plus, in our state the courts tend to almost always side with renters - even if they attempted to kick us out, if someone brought it up legally it'd take at least 6-7 months before they could "toss us in the street."

But I don't have the time or the energy to deal with the inconvenience - let alone the money needed for a lawyer

Call the landlord over when you're all home and have an intervention.  :yesnod:

Take their wallets and cigarettes when they're asleep. That's really fucked up of them, maybe invite your landlord in to tell them that if they smoke again they're going to get evicted.

I understand the no money thing.  Like some of the others have said I think it might be time for a surprise visit from your landlord.  If you invite him/her in then they don't need the 24 hour advance warning and could see who is smoking and hopefully keep you out of the sights.  I feel for ya on the douchebag roommate thing.  Hope the fuckers learn a lesson.
