Quick question on stem cell research
    #6609072 -

Where do the embryonic stem cells come from? yes, they come from an embryo, but where do scientists get the fertilized eggs? Are they donated somehow from abortions or grown in a lab?

I found this-

1. In the work done by Dr. James Thomson, pluripotent stem cells were isolated directly from the inner cell mass of human embryos at the blastocyst stage. Dr. Thomson received embryos from IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) clinics—these embryos were in excess of the clinical need for infertility treatment. The embryos were made for purposes of reproduction, not research. Informed consent was obtained from the donor couples. Dr. Thomson isolated the inner cell mass and cultured these cells producing a pluripotent stem cell line.
2. In contrast, Dr. John Gearhart isolated pluripotent stem cells from fetal tissue obtained from terminated pregnancies. Informed consent was obtained from the donors after they had independently made the decision to terminate their pregnancy. Dr. Gearhart took cells from the region of the fetus that was destined to develop into the testes or the ovaries. Although the cells developed in Dr. Gearhart's lab and Dr. Thomson's lab were derived from different sources, they appear to be very similar.

So in that case, where the fuck does the argument and controversy come in? They were going to be destroyed anyway, there was no potential for human life. I'm really not able to understand why some people are against stem cell research, and that makes it hard for me to write my paper.

The argument against stem cell research is that it is "messing with god's work" Take away our inferior ideas of God and you get more freedom for science.

Remember the controvercy Darwin stirred up without even meaning to?

He simply contradicted religion by saying that species and variations were not individually created by God but were ofspring of a previously exsisting life form(s).

Religion is always in the way of things like scientific progress and world peace. Go figure. This doesn't exemplify athiests though because athiest groups also can get in the way of certain progress and peace (The IRA, THose dudeds from Waco).

Surplus embryos from in-vitro fertilization attempts in labs.
