Stress on computer: Shuttind down versus hibernation?
    #6589762 -

I just got a new computer not too long ago and I've been leaving it on pretty much 24/7 with some breaks because of torrents running and I was just curious how much of stress this puts on the poor thing.

I downloaded a computer timer that will turn my computer on and off at certain times, but it only puts it into hibernation mode and then brings it back at a given time. Is hibernation just as good as turning it off?

Hibernation puts all of the processes of the pc into RAM, letting you get right back to it when it clicks back on. By hibernating, you're saving electricity, not much more. I've heard it's like a car, it's better to leave it running that constantly start it up and shut it down. No harm in leaving it on unless your electric bill is off the wall.

What OS are you running?

I always leave my machines running and haven't noticed problems because of it. Only problem is that eventually Windows may start to get a little sluggish and I reboot. Doesn't happen too often.

I like to shut it off completely to give it a rest, hibernating just dumps the contents of the RAM onto the hard drive, so you can start it up quickly.. so everything will still be running exactly the way it was after you turn it on.

Like if it was being sluggish when I hibernate, it's usually sluggish when I turn it back on.

That isn't exactly true. Most electrolytic capacitors have a lifetime of around 1000 hours at specified max voltage. This time increases drastically if the design stays well below the specified max voltage. However, this safety margin increases production costs of the board. With todays narrow margins, a lot of logic boards trade life for profit when it comes to capacitor specification.

So, what I've gathered is that I'm not really going to kill my pc from leaving it on all the time? Just shut it down when it gets sluggish?

Yea, but I am wondering why it gets sluggish. You said its a new computer right?

I dont notice mine ever getting sluggish...

Mine isn't usually sluggish, but I download a ton of stuff and run a lot of programs at once, so it slows down minorly at times. Nothing dramatic or anything.

Well, then I would say that is due to a heavy load, which restarting would not help.

My advice, keep it on

Most common cause is memory leaks in OS applications... a memory leak is a programming error where an application allocates memory for a task, but never releases it. The memory will remain consumed until the program ends, even if it is no longer being used. Eventually, the computer runs out of physical memory and has to start swapping data between memory and disk. Swapping is a slow process, and causes the machine to run sliggish.

My windows won't shut down at all. Only closes all programs. I have to hold down the off-button for 5 secs.

From what I understand tho, each time a computer (or any electronic) gets turned on, a surge goes through those very capacitors which is much larger than those during normal operation. This in turn results in a shorter life for those capacitors from 'wear and tear'. Sorta like putting a glass under hot and cold water repeatedly.

So really the question is which is worse?

(altho, personaly, i think most people would replace their computer long before anything like this would affect them. I change my computers once every ~5 years, no burnout yet....)
