Anyone have a Deviant Arts account ?

Ive been browsing for awhile, so i signed up yesterday to share afew of my photos and i gotta say it's almost as addictive as this place (tho time will tell,,:))..

I think i'm going to like this site alot,, :thumbup:.

If anyone shroomerites have an account there please post it so i can take a look,, :cool:.

Nice thanks. I wasn't even sure if i had your page at first (being a noob and not knowing how to do much), then i saw the shrooms..

DeviantART, for lack of a better word, sucks.

There is unfair staff bias there. The place is swarming with the most blatant repetitive anime chick pr0n, but they are incredibly uptight about male nakedness, regardless if the work does in fact hold significant artistic merit.

But that's moral. For the artist there is even a more compelling reason to say no to DA.

Read the fine print, and read it well.
By posting a work there, it in essence becomes their property which even includes marketing your work, wholly or even altered, without notifying or paying you. You can argue that these are good people, but I don't know them well enough, I do know there has been sudden banning of staff members and such, so that may change at any time. Any true art site will by defaut state that copyright is yours and yours alone, but DA in the small print has a contract that by submitting your works, they can be taken from you just like that.

It would not be an overstatement to say that if DA decided to suddenly take ownership of all those works, it would be the greatest art robbery of all time, as there might be a milion works archived there, all under that sneaky contract.

Again i beg to differ,, i'm sure male artistic nudes are fine if they're put under the right categories.. I just did a quick search and found plenty..

I thought they were only allowed to use your works to publicize their site ?,, and the people who submit works still hold the rights as far as production is concerned ?...

To be honest i'm not really bothered about all that,, it's just nice to share something i like with other people, and get some feed back...
Everyone ive talked too so far has been great,, and i like alot of the work on there.

What would you suggest then ?..

I don't expect my pics to do well generally,, and i don't intend to make any money it's just nice to share and get some genuine feed back.

I dont doubt this at all.

I have seen some really incredible artists there. Lots of them. Countless numbers almost (ok, meaningless to some extent with this debate....) :laugh: 

But, did everyone get suckered? Is there proof of these alegations?

Im genuinely curious now.....

I love DA. I'm not a member myself but browse it daily.

I'm not a member so I don't know about the legal stuff but can't you make prints and sell your art work there? It seems to go against them being able to take your artwork.

look, if you don't care about your images getting ripped off, then by all means do it.

but unless you pay for the portion of the site to use, all material you upload to them is theirs to do whatever they want with.

just be careful. when i found that shit out, i got my stuff the hell off there.

I can understand that deviant might suck for reasons suggested,, so is there an alternative.

well, my take on it is. if you are a serious artist, use the pay portion of deviant, or don't use deviant at all; give your material some protection. if you're not a serious artist, by all means use deviant art because you do not care about your stuff potentially getting ripped.

my 2 cents. no harm done with your question, it's just hard to read emotion/sarcasm/etc through text sometimes.

If there's an alternative then i'll go for that,, if not then i'm happy with the good people and their comments.

Real art sites don't do this. Not like this.
Because this says that the fruits of your labor no longer really are yours.

Embed a nice DA logo into the picture, and it is not your picture but a derivative work, which is yours in no way. There are whispers among emo potsmoking artists that these (entirely unusual) loopholes do not exist by coincidence.

I'm guessing money is involved but can you recommend any alternatives ?

That is not true. If you put something on the internet (a pic of your cat, an essay you wrote, a smiley you made) then that automatically is copyright protected. You don't even have to write (c) on it, if the rights can be traced back to you then they are yours.

To avoid such issues the Shroomery makes you agree upon joining that what you post here (this post for instance) is cast in the public domain.

But otherwise you got to explicitly state that you cast something in the public domain and waive all rights and obligations to it, otherwise it is yours and yours alone.

If you put up a website and post a picture of a funny frog, and someone rightclick saves it, they are in copyright violation, just like with an mp3 song. If you find your pic on another website, you can sue the poster for stealing your art.

A real art site doesn't have to do with quality money, but I use the phrase to distinguish sites similar to deviantART who clearly state that all rights remain with the original creator of the artwork, and does not infringe on it in any way.
They are out there, you need to look for the kind of art you like and then pick a site with artist-respecting Terms Of Service.

then do your own research man. this thread is about deviant art, and i put my 2 cents forward about my experience with it. what more do you want? if i knew any other sources don't you think i would have told you?
