Colorado Judge and Pot Penalties

Damn for the new pot penalties but cheers to this guy for standing up for what he (and most of us) believe in. :thumbup:

Washington, DC: A Boulder County Municipal Court Judge has resigned from his position to protest a pending ordinance that would enact new citywide pot penalties.

Lafayette Municipal Court Associate Judge Lenny Frieling resigned from the bench after eight years following the city council's interim approval of an ordinance to make minor marijuana possession offenses punishable by a $1,000 fine and up to one year in jail. Under Colorado law, minor pot violations are punishable by a $100 fine and no jail time.

"Since you have seen fit to increase the penalty for cannabis possession, ... I find that I am morally and ethically unable to sit as a judge for the city," Frieling wrote in his resignation letter. Frieling is a lifetime member of NORML and serves on the organization's legal committee.

The Lafayette City Council is scheduled to hold a final hearing on the proposed ordinance next week.

Precisely. Ya'll need to get off your fucking asses and go get something done about it. Has anyone called the city council and expressed your support for the judge, demanding that they drop the new penalities and elect the judge again? Well, have you? :mad:

I haven't, but if someone gets me an email address or a phone number I'll do it without a second's hesitation. If no one does I'll search for one later on today (about to go to Petco and Petsmart :wink:). Every time I read about some stupid thing that some senator said about drugs, I find an email and give them some constructive criticism. :grin:

if he quit the bench does that mean the $1000 fine and 1 year jail time is mandatory?

if not he would have been better to stay on and never hand out the sentence or fine

that new law is disgusting and another backward step

Some people have a code of ethics and integrity. He doesn't want to be a judge that doesn't want to uphold a law that he doesn't believe in, because that is the duty of a judge. He wouldn't have a choice as far as the fine goes.
