The Greatest of its Kind
    #6538067 -

Quote:
LBV 1806-20 is a possible binary star located 30,000–49,000 light-years from the Sun, towards the center of the galaxy. It has a total system mass of 130–150 Solar masses and an estimated variable luminosity of up to 38 million times that of the Sun

A star that shines 38.000.000 times as bright as the sun

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

nice idea for a thread.

Think the cheetah is the fastest living animal on the planet? Think again.

With a top speed of 114 km/h (71mph) the wild cat doesn't even come close to the stoop of the Peregrine Falcon in which it dives steeply at speeds in excess of 300 km/h (185mph) into the wings of its prey.

Its fastest speed recorded is 390 km/h (242.3mph) which without a doubt makes this little animal the fastest of its kind.

"The world's heaviest and longest mammal, and also the largest animal ever recorded, is the blue or sulphur-bottom whale (Balaenoptera Musculus), also called Sibbald's rorqual. Newborn calves are 6.5-8.6 m 21ft 3½ in -281/2 ft long and weigh up to 3 tonnes. The barely visible ovum of the blue whale calf weighing a fraction of a milligram grows to a weight of c.26 tonnes in 22¾ months, made up of 10¾ months, gestation and the first 12 months of life. This is equivalent to an increase of 3 x 100000000000."

Longest Blue Whale ever recorded: 110 ft 3 inches, but is disputed by some. Largest recorded by NMML was 98ft long.

The largest Blue Whale accurately weighed by NMML scientists to date was a female that weighed 177 tonnes though the longest blue whale accurately recorded(the 98 footer) is speculated in excess of 180 tonnes.

"Blue whale's head is so wide that an entire professional football team -- about 50 people -- could stand on its tongue. Its heart is as big as a small car, and its arteries are wide enough that you could climb through them."

"What is the world's smallest mammal?

The honor of being the world's smallest mammal goes to Thailand's bumblebee bat.

The bumblebee bat weighs less than a penny and full grown is about 11 mm in length.

Some of you creature savvy people out there may think the world's smallest mammal is the Etruscan pygmy shrew and you may have a case. The debate is whether mass or size constitutes the smallest and although lighter, the pygmy shrew is longer."

"smallest mammal in the world at 30-40 mm in length and weighing approximately 2 grams (about the weight of a Canadian or U.S. dime). It is the only known species in its genus and is found in a tiny region of western Thailand, in the Sai Yok National Park, Kanchanaburi Province. Recently, it has also been discovered in adjacent Myanmar.

The skull of the Bumblebee Bat, at 11 mm, is smaller than that of any other mammal"

Strongest Creature(proportional strength)

"A huge African Elephant can only carry up to 25% of its own weight on its back. The rhinoceros beetle can carry 850 times its own weight. There's NO CONTEST. That would be like an elephant carrying 850 elephants on its back."

Quite possibly the largest super computer ever built. SAGE AN/FSQ-7 (Semi Automaitc Ground Environment) was a the computer built in the 50's used as an automated control system for NORAD from the 50's- 80's.

Each machine sported

55,000 vacuum tubes
.5 acres of floor space
275 ton weight

SAGE sites were connected to multiple radar stations which transmitted tracking data (range and azimuth) in digitized format by modem over ordinary telephone lines. These digitized inputs were automatically prepared from analog radar inputs by the AN/FST-2B at the radar stations. The SAGE computers then collected the tracking data for display on a CRT as icons. Operators at the center could select any of the "targets" on the display with a light gun, and then display additional information about the tracking data reported by the radar stations.

Once again thank you wikipedia for some actual sourced info...

Yes this is true

"A giant fungus of the species Armillaria ostoyae in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon was found to span 8.9 km² (2,200 acres)[3], which would make it the largest organism by area. Whether or not this is an actual individual organism, however, is disputed: some tests have indicated that they have the same genetic makeup [4], but this does not exclude its being a clonal colony of numerous smaller individuals. Another clonal colony that rivals the Armillaria and the Populus colonies in size is a strand of the giant marine plant, Posidonia oceanica, discovered in the Mediterranean Sea near the Balearic Islands. It is about 8 km (4.3 miles) in length."

Gigantopithecus

"Gigantopithecus was a genus of ape that existed from as long ago as 5 million years to as recently as 100 thousand years ago in what are today the countries of China, India, and Vietnam, placing Gigantopithecus in the same timeframe and geographical location as early hominids, such as Homo erectus. The fossil record suggests that the Gigantopithecus species were the largest apes that ever lived. It was probably a quadruped and an herbivore and with a diet that consisted primarily of bamboo, possibly supplemented with seasonal fruits, although recent theory suggests it was a generalist in its eating habits. Although it is not known why Gigantopithecus died out, researchers believe that climate change and resource competition with better adapted species were the main reasons.

Based on the slim fossil evidence, primarily huge molars, nearly one inch square teeth, recovered from Chinese traditional medicine shops, but clearly genuine, Gigantopithecus was likely about 3 metres tall and weighed from 300 to 500 kg — 2 to 3 times larger than gorillas, although its closest living relatives are the orangutans.

Some cryptozoologists have claimed that a race of gigantopithecines are the legendary primates known in various geographic locations as Bigfoot, Yowie, Yeren, Skunk Ape or Yeti. A mock documentary about Skull Island on the DVD for the 2005 remake of the film King Kong suggests that Kong's species evolved from Gigantopithecus"

It seems I'm doing a lot of the "largest"

"The largest of the segmented worms is the African giant earthworm (Microcahetus rappi). This huge worm can reach a length of as much as 6.7 m (22 ft) and can weigh over 1.5 kg (3.1 lb). Only the giant Gippsland earthworm (Megascolides australis) and a few giant polychaetes reach nearly comparable sizes, reaching 4 m (13 ft) and 3.6 m (11.9 ft), respectably."

That's a huge ass worm!
