Trans planting cacti
    #6517234 -

I'am atempting my first cacti grow and I happend to find an astrophytum asterias ,but it is in a 3x3 pot with 2 other unknown types of cacti. I would realy like to do this with minimal damage and or stress to any of the cactus if any one out there has any tips on what kind of soil/sand would be best and what size pot also I have no idea how big they grow any help is very appreciated.

soil mixes seem pretty debated. it would seem most peopel agree on a few things. well drained. no organics. i use about 50/40/10 soil/coarse sand/fine gravel (the sharp rigid kind, not the rounded aquarium stuff). for short round cacti i tend to go 1-2 inch bigger in pot size than the cacti (diameter). thats just me.

i don't aggree with the "no organics" in fact, i don't think ive known anyone who would. organics are superior to synthetics, and far less chance of over fert.

well drained is important tho.

i mean soil not fertilizers. pieces of leaf, wood etc. i fertilize all mine with compost water/worm poo.

worm poo is totally organic soil.  good stuff too.
personally i like to use a kew kilos of manure and just stir it all up with a lew litres of perlite, zeolite, grit, sand, concrete rubble, and then chuck in a bag of commercial cactus soil.  makes for a nice supply for several pots.

each year i skim off the top 2-3 inches and replace with a mic of organic compost and grit.

i use compost as well, but i make sure it is WELL decomposed. personally i dont like the idea of half broken down bits of things (a lot of commercial compost doesn't seem to be fully broken down), especially with seedlings (mold). but a cactus his size i guess there isnt much worry.

yeah, dont use rich soils for seedlings,
that pretty much is a rule for all plants.
