Accent specific to your region??
    #6468959 -

I was just sitting here staring off into space, thinking about accents.
Question is, do you think, or have people told you that you have an accent representing the area you grew up in?? If you go to another state of country, or in some cases, another city, is it obvious to the locals that you are not from around there based on your accent?

Another interesting concept is that of "slang". I find that slang terms vary quite a great deal between sub-cultures, and towns. For instance, I am from San Diego, and when I speak with people from Northern California/San Francisco area, there are very obvious communication gaps, where words must be described in context, or synonyms are required for communication.
Another example; my sister and I represent very different sub-cultural demographics, despite us being only 8 months apart in age. I am often baffled by the phrases or words she uses. She is influenced by what people would consider "pop-culture", whereas, my familiarity is with the internet references and lingo. If I write or say "lol, wtf, brb" etc, she's like "what??"

Off on a rant... anyone got any examples or comments?

I find that it's mostly word choice, rather than accent, that gives away where you're from, at least in my travels throughout Canada. Whether you use the word "huck" or "chuck" as a synonym for "toss," for example.

I also request that you put a smaller image in your sig, por favor.

I'm originally from Minnesota. People sometimes are able to tell if I call someone a hoser.

Hehehe, never heard "huck" except as a name.

As for the sig, do you want me to change it out of convenience? What's the reason?

Californiana, especially young californians, use the word "like" as a filler a LOT. i.e.
"We went to the like, park, and there were like all these bees, and I caught a couple of them that had like fallen onto the ground, and like, i carried them one at a time over to the vending machines, and like, put them in the door thing that you get food out of."
Aahahaha, it's so funny sounding when typed! I tried breaking the habit of "like" more than once, but it's just a fact of living in California, if you are around people between the ages of maaaybe 10-35 at all.

Nope, that is the stereotype. Start listening to people within that age range specified, and you'll see.

I'm from Yorkshire, England.
I have quite a strong accent but it get's alot thicker in some places.

"Examples of vocabulary and grammar more specific to Yorkshire dialects include

Definite article reduction: shortening of 'the' to a form without a vowel, often written t`. "Down the pub" is pronounced "down t` pub", where the t` represents a sound more like a glottal stop than a true t sound. That is, the phrase sounds like "downt <very brief pause> pub", where the t of downt is completely or very nearly absent. Giving the t` a full t sound ("down <brief pause> terpub") or omitting it entirely ("down pub") are mistakes commonly, and often deliberately, made by someone affecting a Yorkshire accent.

Aye is frequently used for yes.

The use of owt and nowt (sometimes spelled as aught and naught, but never pronounced /ɔ¢°t/ and /nɔ¢°t/ as those spellings might suggest) for "anything" or "nothing".

The word 'self' may become 'sen',, and 'my' may become 'me'.. So instead of 'myself' it's 'me sen'"

Traveling farmers first noticed this
I think it was abcnews or something

I traveled enough as a kid to never keep an accent of my own, but sort of unintentionally pick up the accent of the area I'm in.

There really is no Alaskan accent if you aren't Native, however people from Alaska sound 100% more intelligent than people with accents from most parts of the US probably because of the LACK of accent.

Where I am now (Phoenix) the main accents are Mexican and Valley Girl.

Edit: Unless you're a teacher at Arizona State.  Then your accent is Japanese, or Korean, or something else REALLY FUCKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND.

I'm from Chicago, and while I moved around enough as a kid not to pick up an accent, people who lived their entire lives or their formative years in the city proper (NOT the suburbs) generally have a specific accent.

I'd be hard pressed to give a good description of it though. I've just always thought of it as a "Chicago" accent. Sounds vaguely italian to me....

I'm from Arkansas and had a strong southern drawl when I joined the Army back in '85. After I got out of the Army my accent changed. It was more of a mid-western accent. Some people even said I sounded like I came from California.

Accents are cool.

There are even local accents. People from my home town have a much slower accent than the people in surrounding towns. My sister has been recognized as being from my HT just by her accent. :crazy2:

Welly well well, I am going to a concert tonight.  I will pay special attention to how frequently people use the word "like", and report back on the approximate age and gender of people and how often they use "like".

I've lived in San Diego my entire life, and on friday I'll be moving to the San Francisco area.  It'll be interesting to see if I learn to tolerate the notorious "hella" of NorCal- god forbid I catch onto it!  :lipsrsealed:

Man, you should hear my accent. I was born in Hong Kong (although I'm European), then moved to the UK when i was 7, then moved to New Zealand when I was 10. Plus I'm always travelling and living in odd countries for periods where I intergrate everyones accents into my own. No one can ever put a finger on where I am from when they meet me.
