Can't Log into text chat!

I haven't been able to login succesfully in the text chat in over a week!  I was able to before...  It says Connecting... Logging In...
(and then FOREVER of a Pause) Then... disconnected from.... So...

please help me figure it out!  The chat has been a very valuable part of this site!

Hey,

Sorry about your problems logging into chat! The first thing I'd do is install the latest version of Java if you haven't already. If it still doesn't work, please click 'Tools | Sun Java Console' (in IE) and then try to load chat again. See if any errors appear in the console, and if so please copy and paste them into a reply for me.

Another alternative is to use a standalone IRC chat client like mIRC to connect to irc.shroomery.org:6667.

I hope this helps but please let me know if you still can't get it working.

This is what the box said when I went to Tools/Sun Java Console.
doesn't look like any errors and I verified my Java is up to date. What else do you think it might be? It was working before... I haven
t added anything new to my puter... Thanks for your help!

Well I'm pretty sure I know what it is... if it was working before and then it stopped, it looks like the switch to SSL (encrypted chat) broke it. I have no idea why though. That's weird that it fails but there are no errors in the console. Do you have a firewall set up? You might need to open port 9999. Also, your version of the JRE actually isn't the absolute latest... it should still work fine, but maybe try updating to 1.6.0 from http://java.com/ to help narrow down the problem. Like blink says, there are also good standalone clients which should work fine. But I'd like to get this resolved so other people don't run into the same problem.

eeew.... lots of tech talk I don't really understand. But, what I think you are saying is that my firewall is somehow blocking this from getting started. So, the question is how to unblock it? I will try some things and get back to you... Thanks!

okay... I probaly screwed it up a little further... because now I don't get any pause. Just click connect...says logging in... then immediately says disconnect. And no errors when I checked the Java console again. I guess I should give up, the time I have spent getting ti to work is the time I would haved using the chat anyway! lol. Thanks for your help!

This is so stupid every time i go in the tect chat, someone boots me...
