karate
    #6380964 -

im 19 and ive been studying buddhism and taosim for the past 4 years. from everything i've read i have gathered that karate is a good way to express many buddhist ideals in a more physical way. i was curious if anyone here studies buddhism and dabbles in karate and how it has worked for you. i am seriously thinking about starting karate to help further my studies.

It's all in the teacher but karate is way down on my list. Try Akido or Tai Chi, or some Sholin Kung Fu.

Akido is very calming and powerful at the same time.

I second what Icelander said. Except I will add Jeet Kune Do to that list.

There's nothing wrong with Karate persay. If you find a good teacher it can be a very fulfilling passtime, but if you're serious about learning some REAL discipline, Icelander and Shroomism have given you solid advice.

Yes, it is all about finding a good teacher. Unfortunately, good karate teachers are very few and far between, especially in North America.

Personally Id suggest some sort of Kung-Fu or Thai-Chi, but not Aikido.

Jeet Kun Do is not an individual style btw, its something you apply to a style. And yea, regardless of what martial art you choose, you should incorporate JKD into it if you wants it for self defense. But if you want solely healthly blood flow circulatory stretching bla bla bla stuff, then Thai Chi would be the prefered with no need for JKD.

ps: and I agree with the teacher comment. No matter what you choose a good instructor is a must!

Indeed it is not an individual style. But more of a philosophy you can apply to any and all styles.

I would also recommend Qi Gong for mental and inner strength and dexterity.

Yeah, Qi Gong/Buddhist/Toaist practices are an internal cultivation practice. Most martial arts are a form of external cultivation. They are too separate things.

It is all exlained clearly here. http://www.falundafa.org/eng/books.htm
