Re: .999...(repeating) = 1 [Re: DieCommie]

Surely 0.9999..... can never equal 1 because, if you subtract that 0.99999999.... number from 1 you won't get 0, you will get a value incredibly close to 0, like 0.000000.....0001.

ie 1 - 0.99999999999 will not equal zero. But Im no maths brain.

If you subtract .999... from 1 you do get zero.
If you get a non-zero answer like .000....0001 then you didnt use .999...., you used a finite sequence of nines, like .999....999

I think this is incorrect, because if you think about it

0.999(into infinity)
...is different from saying
0.999(for a very long time)

0.999(recurring) is indeed equal to 1, but only as long as we are talking about infinity rather than just "a really long string of numbers".

If you substract 0.999(recurring) from 1, you will not get a string of zeroes ending in 1, because those 9s never actually end, so where would the 1 come from?

Incorrect, 0.9999... (repeating) is not an approximation, it is exact, and it's exact value is 1.

> Yeah. It definitly is 1.  Ok I read the whole thread. And now I'm more convinced.

Finally!  Woohoo!  You made the effort worthwhile, thank you!

> .999.... = 1 is correct 99.999....% of the time.

Also correct!  :smile:  (and funny)

> if you subtract that 0.99999999.... number from 1 you won't get 0,

Of course you will.  0.999...(repeating) minus 1 equals 0, exactly.

> ie 1 - 0.99999999999 will not equal zero. But Im no maths brain.

Correct, but, 0.99999999999 is not the same as 0.9999... (repeating).  You are using one concept to try and prove another unrelated concept is incorrect.

>  If you subtract .999... (repeating) from 1 you do get zero.

Yes you do.  The exact answer is 0.

> This is all so absurd, youve all seen the proofs, show the steps why they are wrong.

Proofs seem not to matter when what is being proven goes against what we have been incorrectly taught (or against what seems obvious).  I don't understand why... a proof is a proof... it is a truth, an absolute, a law, a "with our understanding, this is how it has to be" type of statement.  If it is wrong, prove it wrong... otherwise, accept that it is correct, no matter how odd the results seem, and move on.

> 0.999(recurring) is indeed equal to 1, but only as long as we are talking about infinity rather than just "a really long string of numbers".

Correct... and you have hit upon the difficulty of it as well.  :smile:  There is a difference between 0.999... (repeating) and 0.999 (followed by a huge number of 9's).

For those that still have trouble with this concept, go back and read the first part of the post I made with all the math equations in it... the part that talks about 1/x ratios as x gets larger and larger.

Some people are very good at math, and others are not. This is like schoolchildren debating civics with a 60 year old, experienced political science professor.

.999... = 1 is a complex and difficult to understand concept if your brain isn't perfectly suited for math. If you don't "understand" it, don't debate it. Save that for the real mathmiticians and numbernerds who DO understand.

I am intelligent, but I am not a math guy... I accept that .999... = 1 because people who are VERY good at math say it's so. It doesn't seem to add up, but it does... on a level very few humans can truly comprehend.

Think of it as an optical illusion using numbers... then accept it and move on.

Wrong.

The correct answer is "nobody knows".

Thanks for playing anyhow, though.

Math is trippy....it doesn't actually exist... It's all these theories and laws, but, were all created by humans to try and explain behaviors of physical properties.

So one could say... 1 does not equal .9999 {infinity} and still be correct because numbers could be anything to any being anywhere. If you catch my drift, Im not good at explaining myself sometimes.

But, I consider math real, as I love it, and numbers are amazing because they hold true, like they are real.

So one could say... 1 does not equal .9999 {infinity} and still be correct because numbers could be anything to any being anywhere.

In math, you can say anything you want, but some statements (like 1 is not equal to .999 repeating) have consequences in other areas of math that cause the whole thing to stop representing the observed world.

You can say that 2 + 1 = 5, and you can even invent huge mathematical constructs based on that. But when you go grocery shopping and put 2 apples in your basket, then you add 1 apple, your basket will always end up containing 3 apples, not 5.

You can do this at the grocery store down the street or in another galaxy, in English or Chinese. It doesn't matter: you will always end up with 3 apples in your basket, not 5.

Same goes for 1 = .999 repeating. You can say it's not true all you like, but later when you start to study math at a deeper level than third grade intuition about arithmetic, you will find all of math that is so useful and consistent, and that so well represents reality will stop working.

You guys may not see this now, but a few weeks into your first calculus class, you will.  :smirk:

Once again, I am TOTALLY agreed to the fact that 1 = .999 [infinity].

I was just saying that math is weird because it isn't "real". I know you can argue and say that it is, because it physically represents solid bodies.

My previous post wasn't clear, so nevermind, Im still unable to explain what I was thinking.

Oh and for the record, Im getting a 87% in my Calc 3 class :p I have my final on monday and then its off to differential equations.

I cannot believe that this is still debated. There is no contradiction. Mathematics is not based upon your "gut feeling" or your inability to imagine certain concepts.

There has been ample mathematical proof presented in this topic. This is not a matter of "debate" anymore than lim x->inf (1/x) = 0 or x^0 = 1.

0.333... is NOT an approximation of 1/3. It is the exact value of 1/3 represented in decimal form.

3.14 is a decimal approximation to pi, just 1.41 is a decimal approximation to (2)^1/2.

Since people will still think that this is a "debate," consider the following proof.

Let x = 0.999...

10x = 9.999...

Subtract x from both side

10x -x = 9.999...-0.999...
9x = 9
x = 1

But we defined x = 0.999...

Therefore, 0.999... = 1. QED

It can't get any clearer than this. A similar line of reasoning can be used to prove any infinite decimal expansion is another way of representing an integer. Try it to prove that 0.333... = 1/3 for yourself.

.9 is less than 1, correct?

putting infinitely more 9s on it will not make it one. it will always be less by some fraction.

lim 1/x = 0 (this is proven and used all the time in calculus)
x->inf

Its basically the same thing as the .999 [inf] = 1.

.999 (a lot) does not equal .999(infinity). Infinity is a hard concept to grasp.

> .9 is less than 1, correct?

Correct.

> putting infinitely more 9s on it will not make it one.

Incorrect. *sigh*

Just because your mind is too small to grasp the concept does not mean that the concept is incorrect. The fact that you can move your fingers to type the message is proof that the concept is correct, in a round about, but very real touchy feely it doesn't matter what your gut says 'cause your fingers move sort of way.

Would you claim that 0.3 is less than 1/3? I would. Would you claim that the 0.333... (repeating) is less that 1/3 or exactly equal to 1/3? I hope you would claim that it is exactly equal to 1/3. If not, you need to repeat fourth grade math. Would you claim that 0.9 is less than 1? You already have, and you were correct. Why then, would you claim that 0.999... (repeating) is less than 1/1?

> it will always be less by some fraction.

What is 1 minus 1/infinity? Is it less than one, or equal to one? Before you answer with something stupid, such as "if you subtract something from 1, then the result has to be less than 1", think about what 1-0 would equal. Before you answer with something stupid, such as "1/infinity is larger (or smaller) than zero" think about the value of 1/(infinity-1).

... or use google... what you will find is that if we could evaluate 1/infinity, the resulting value would be 0. Thus the ratio 1/x as x approaches infinity equals 0. So, 1-1/x as x approaches infinity equals 1, exactly... which also happens to equal 0.9999... (repeating).
