Re: .999...(repeating) = 1 [Re: sleepy]

what about .000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 with an infinite number of zeroes before the 1?

does that equal zero?

You cant put an infinite amount of zeros between a point (.) and one. That is a finite space and it cant hold an infinite amount of zeros.

Really? I can imagine 0.000...1 with infinite zeros in between as easily as I can 0.99999... with infinite 9's trailing. The former represents an infinitely small number.

I don't think .999... = 1.

It's just proof that you cannot perfectly divide 1 into 3.

Mystery of the trinity...

Think of infinity as "not bounded" or "not finite".

Quote:
sleepy said:.9999 multiplied by infinity equals 1  (taken from .99999*infinity = 1)

and so if .9999infinity=1 then infinity=1

In math, infinity is not a number.  You have a string of numbers infinitly long, like 'pi' or add things an infinite amount of times, or see how a function goes as the variable increases to infinity.  But infinity itself is not a number.  You cannont add, subtract, multiply, or divide it.

I have to admit I cant tell if your serious with this stuff or just trying to act the fool.  :crazy2:

But if you know the starting point, the first zero after the point. And you know the ending point the, one at the end, then isnt the set of numbers "finite"? It is bounded with a beginning and an end. .999.... does not have an end. It is not finite, not bounded, infinite.

This is reminding me of cardinality which I dont remember well...

whoa. this math is based on circles, right?

This is how math works. You go from one statement to the next logical statement and the next until you arrive at a result.

So, you didn't answer the question:

Do you agree that 1/3 = .3333... exactly?

Thats a fallacy of our base ten number system. If we used a base twelve system, then 1/3 = .4 But even in our base ten number system you can divide one into three exctally, its represented as (1/3), thats the exact number.

Re: .999...(repeating) = 1 [Re: trendal]

how would i make and use a base infinity system. (the secret to antigravity perhaps?)
a base infinity system is basically impossible, but in fact since everything is possible, the impossible is possible. its like a base zero system. base zero =base infinity = base1

1/3, if you read my edits on the first page, is .333 repeated

but .333repeated is not a number, it's numbers.

.3333repeated is also 15

.3333repeated =4

.3333repeated=3

funny thing but id say that 1/3 is the number least likely to be .333repeated, because 1/3 is an exact simple number, its infinities are not out of wack.

OK, now Im 99% sure your just acting the fool.  I dont mind though, I like typing and thinking about this stuff. :stoned:

its hard to use infinities

i'm just doubting that you did it correctly

infinities are impossible to use correctly

Exactly. 1/3 is not an exact number in base ten, 1/3 does not = .333... exactly, because .333... is never exact, right?

so .999... could only equal one if infinity was exact, which it's not... right?

Both (1/3) and .333.... are exact numbers. The fact that the exact number cant be represented by a finite amount of digits is the fallacy, thats it.

Re: .999...(repeating) = 1 [Re: sleepy]
    #6340017 -

the problem is that 1/3 is 1 number and .333infinity is 2 numbers.

mathmetitcians everywhere agree to this because how can .99999 become 1 without adding anything to it?

you cannot use a double number where you usually use only single numbers

1/3=.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333=inifinity

THAT works

(i just didnt put in the word infinity, there are actuall an infinite number of .33333333333333)

Re: .999...(repeating) = 1 [Re: sleepy]

1/3=.3333infinity=infinity

i'd agree with this, in other words

that may seem superfluous but i think it's very not.

Does this means there is a contradiction in our math structure? I always thought of math as a universal language, but the proof that he shows kind of contradicts certain mathametical assumptions doesn't it?

"Surely if 9x = 9, then x = 1. But since x also equals .9999999... we get that .9999999... = 1. The algebra is impeccable."

thats his entire proof (from the original site). please do whatever you have to to understand that proof, because i don't.

he proved that .999999...=1 because .999999....=1?

thats not proof thats saying it is because it is

You want the answer?

Some people are very good at math, and others are not. This is like schoolchildren debating civics with a 60 year old, experienced political science professor.

.999... = 1 is a complex and difficult to understand concept if your brain isn't perfectly suited for math. If you don't "understand" it, don't debate it. Save that for the real mathmiticians and numbernerds who DO understand.

I am intelligent, but I am not a math guy... I accept that .999... = 1 because people who are VERY good at math say it's so. It doesn't seem to add up, but it does... on a level very few humans can truly comprehend.

Think of it as an optical illusion using numbers... then accept it and move on.
