herbivory - grasslands

Welp...based on my research so far, it seems that grazers such as bison and cattle serve to increase the species diversity in grasslands by chowing down on C4 grasses.  C4 photosynthesis allows for more efficient growth and less photorespiration, basically, meaning less wasted energy.  The grass gets munched and so doesn't dominate over the grasslands, other species are given a chance to get a foothold.

It turns out insect herbivory, likely due to preferential chowing down on less efficient growers, actually decreases plant diversity (although total plant biomass is increased - possibly due to higher rates of decomposition and thus nutrient cycling OR because the more efficient growers can take over more easily).

More diversity means a more stable community.  Like a wise person will diversify the stocks they choose in the stock market.  Same deal with ecosystems, really.

Much more research will be done by me in order to get the final verdict.

i dont think it is a better thing to diversify( in some respects). explain to me how it is?? diversity is a function of the environment. example artic biome polar bears and some cryophilic bacteria aswell as seals in the ocean for the bears and the odd other carnivour. "(basically)"not to diverse but life persists. the diversity in the rain forest is caused by constant selection pressure.(also divercity in teh rain forrest also does not help it at all, chop down a boreal forrest or chop down soem rain forrest see which one comes back first. also diversity also causes problems with cause very specific niches, meaning if one kidn of tree dies this bird will die or teh bird pollinates a spesific tree then the bird goes extinct ect) so if insects are eating the plants eventually this will lead to more diverse plants that can grow enough or ones that resist the insects if not teh insects will eat all teh plants that they can, then there would only be your "low diversity scenario". but low and behold then teh insect populations decreases because it reached its carrying capacity. thus allowing more diverse plants to grow once again. and with C4 grasses it all depends on the climate. tehy prefer hotter then i think 15 degrees usually growing later in the season while the C3 grow in teh spring when c4s do not.. seems to me its a classic niche type scenario so depending on the climate c4 will never dominate just ocuppy the land for perhaps a longer time tehn c3 grasses....

Also i know grazers prefer soft C3 grass to hard C4. easier to digest. farm boy

Although grazers may prefer C3 grasses (I haven't heard of this), they will become out-competed by C4 grasses.  I haven't heard anything about C4 not growing in the spring.  The whole point of evolving C4 pathways is to grow more efficiently (like I said, less respiration).

So if C3 is suffering from competitive exclusion from the quicker-growing C4 grasses, the grazers won't have a choice.  The climate I'm talking about is grasslands, so C4 grasses do fine there.

I have basically no idea what you are talking about with the insects :lol:

I am basing my conclusions off of the findings of only 2 research papers so far, I will upload them.

This is good, it forces me to think about my paper that I have to write.

if i can round up a chart that shows the growth prefered temperature of c3 and c4 i will show you. basically C3 grow better and first because they prefer temps from aroudn 2 deg. C to 10 degrees C. while c4 grasses do do alot better when it is hotter then that.

so C3 will always be up first in teh spring and would always be the first to be ate by herbavours because it is the first food source to eat in teh spring.

about teh insects. they are having a feild day on teh soft c3 grases which makes there numbers increase but if it comes to the point of actually causing diversity loss ( are you talking simpsons index?) they there numbers will go down and teh plant diversity will come back... think rabbit and wolf numbers and how they fluctuate..

its in a prentice hall text book 2004 also says C4 havea  higher synthetic rate when thre is more Co2 then C3 plants..
