Street Fighting, Which One?
    #6261826 -

I wanna focus on street fighting so whenever some jerk comes at me I can defend myself better. Heres a list of some different kinds I found at a MA place.

Muaythai, Boxing, American Freestyle Karate, Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, Submissiong Grappling, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, and Eskrima.

MMA is mixed martial arts so which would be best for winning a fight on the street?

I'm a bit partial to Tae Kwon Do, as I have a second degree black belt, but I've also had my ass handed to me by several akido-style fighters. That's one I've been looking to get in to, but I can't find anywhere around here to take classes. If you can find a school that teaches it, I'd definitely recommend akido. Muay Thai would be a close second.

well the military teaches Judo and for good reason. if you know your judo, you can take just about anyone. you quickly disable someone and then they are at your mercy.

also, i wouldnt say no to muay tai and b. jujitsu. boxing may serve you well, but other than that, martial arts are just that, art. not much functionallity as far as fighting goes.

stick with the judo and muay tai and you'll be fine.

i have seen akido at work and have to say that it is quite impressive, however it relies too much on your opponent. i guarrentee that an akido dude will lose to a BJJ dude.

as for taikwondo, sure, you can use it to fight, but it isnt the best by any means.

if i had the choice i would pick 3:
muay thai for striking,
judo for tossing,
b.j.j for submission.

This has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen/ heard. All these thing are martial arts, wtf?

Tae kwon do is best for me because I can use it to kick the bujeesus out of most people not twice my size. Judo relies more on an opponents size and momentum being used against them, that is the heart of Judo. Akido applies a lot of this but it is not the focus. To say that one is best or even better than the other, is incredibly naive. And to say that "I guarantee that an akido dude will lose to a bjj dude"; what are you 12?!, are you watching Power Rangers right now? Do you not have cable? I don't, but I have seen Spike TV and ultimate fighting challenges. What's best, is what works for the person using it.

i am mostly effective with b.j.j
i would love to take muay thai & judo
if i had the money to do so.

i am a pretty small guy, 120-125 lbs,
but im all muscle mass.
the other night i rolled with a dude who was 185-190 lbs,
& around a foot taller than i am.
from the clinch i was able to take his back,
belly to back suplex, scramble to take his back again,
sink my hooks & apply a rear naked choke.

that was the first time i rolled with the dude
so i didnt sinch the choke in, as i didnt want the possibly
of him freaking out & turning psycho on me.
but if i did sinch down, he would have been out cold.

other than that, my rolling partner all these years
is my little brother who is 50 lbs heavier than i am
& i dominate 95% of the time.

i say that because alot of martial arts just strait up cant comapre to others.

ther is a reason that a few have been widely used. because they work.

jujitsu, muay tai and judo are of the few that are applicable for fighting. the rest just cant measure up. you can take your taikwando and go pick a fight with someone who knows muay tai, judo, or jujitsu. i graurrentee you will get your ass handed to you.

another point: why do you think militaries around the world all rely on those special 3 martial arts and not something like taikwondo? because taikwondo is not good for fighting. plain, simple facts.

The guy with the gun wins
hands down.

I laugh when people bring their fists and feet to a gun fight.

*sigh

again there is a reason the military teeaches the arts that it does.

one of them is to disable and disarm the threat without getting harmed yourself. as more and more warzones move into urban settings, hand to hand combat is getting mroe and more common.

dont think that just because you have a gun that you are somehoow superiour to those of us that ARE weapons.

"i would love to get into an actual fight with someone so i could use my bjj. i have been in lots of spars, yeah, but an actual fight where the guys swingin to seriously hurt you."

I'd say bring it, but I don't fight 12 year olds and I don't fight just to use my imaginary jiu jitsu skills.

"jujitsu, muay tai and judo are of the few that are applicable for fighting. the rest just cant measure up. you can take your taikwando and go pick a fight with someone who knows muay tai, judo, or jujitsu. i graurrentee you will get your ass handed to you."

I've been practicing tae kwon do for 8 years, since I was 17. So I doubt that just because someone knows more judo than me, I'm going to lose. I compete in tournaments at least once, usually twice a year with competitors from all backgrounds and I compete in Tae Kwon Do tournaments once a month. I have beaten many people who practice different forms of martial arts, a lot of whom have been practicing a lot longer than me. You can't say one is better than the other. That's foolish stupidity. And in a serious spar, someone IS swinging to hurt you. Although there's no swinging in judo, but I'm sure you know that....

You honestly sound like a kid who has gotten all of his information from movies and tv., which I assume to be an actuality.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Aikido

most fights end up on the ground...and after a few months of Brazilian jiu jitsu training you will be come pretty knowledgeable with grappling and submission..

aikido i hear takes years of hard work to master...but if practiced properly breaking bones and using your opponents force against them is its main focus

i say if your looking at winning street fights..even if your a small guy your best bet is Brazilian jiu jitsu...if you have plenty of time, and are passionate about wanting to do this..i would go with aikido...

i said that because if you know your muay tai and jujitsu, there will be no reason to learn jujitsu. jujitsu is mostly ground based.

beside that, the chances that you will meet someone who can ground fight is not very good, so you should be fine without it. it takes some time to learn and you would be better off learning the other two.

the fact that you won in a TAI KWON DO tournement isnt saying much, considering that they are all usign TAI KWON DO.

also, in a real fight, the other dude wont stop for a sec if you break your arm.

My opinion is that if you train Muay-Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu then you dont ned to train at anything else (unless you wanna do some boxing on the side just to enforce your hand technique).

Watch some Bruce Lee moves and watch how his style of fighting becomes more and more like Muay-Thai...
Side note, I spent a few months at a Jeet Kune Do school here in Cali and the main classes they taught were Muay-Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, and Kali Sat. The other classes (savate, mma, etc.) they taught were basically the same thing and were taught with these classes, just allowed for different testings to get fighter certificates in different organizations.
The cool thing about this place was that in their classes they also taught stuff like eye gauging, groin kicks, biting, etc.
I miss that place... :frown:

American Freestyle Karate could be alright depending on the trainer, but most times its taught as a family class and does not really prepare you for street or ring fighting.

Submission Grappling is very similar to Brazilan Jiu-Jitsu, take one or the other, doesnt really matter too much, here all that matters is how hard you train.

Aikido has some very amazing stuff that can really leave an opponent handicapped (for life). But to be able to use this fighting style in real time fighting (real life fight) then you need lots and lots of training... lots... and even then one mistake and you leave yourself open without guard. Not good.

Ta Kwon Do is not worth your time. They have some good kicking combination stuff. But other than some kicks they dont teach you how to fight. I have yet to see a Tae Kwon Do fighter win a fight... (dont tell my korean Tae Kwon Do fighter friend I said that...).

Kung-Fu can be good and I know many Kung Fu fighters who are very good fighters. But when you watch them train and fight, it looks just like kickboxing... Why? Because those kickboxing/Muay-Thai moves are the most effective moves, thus the ones they train to use in competitions. Also at the gym I used to go to, many of the Kung-Fu fighters would also join the Muay-Thai and Boxing classes aswell.

Eskrima is weapon fighting. How often do you carry your weapons around with you....

Judo is alright, but why throw them when you can armbar them and end the fight right away instead of throwing him allowing him to get back up and keep fighting?

Conclusion: Muay-Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Grappling is everything you need.
If you want some stuff that also adds a little bit of show and looks cool type stuff, do some Kung-Fu classes and learn their jump kicks, flip kicks, etc.

Yeah E. Honda's thousand hand slap is the fiercest move in all of martial arts, but he drains your health bar too fast when he tries to teach it to you.

I've been trying to find the time and money to learn muy thai, so I'll say right out my opinion is not based on any personal experience. With that said I have to talked to a few MMA fighters I know about this. Go to Pride or UFC and check out all of their stats. Now alot of the fighters have training in a multitude of styles, but which two stand out as the most practiced among fighters? Muy Tai, and BJJ. I'm pretty sure there's a damn good reason for that... In Pride you'll find MUCH more judo than in the UFC, but it is in Japan after all.
