New HD problems

Sorry, I know this belongs in Science and Technology but I'm fighting the clock here...

I just installed my new HD. I moved the old one over a slot, and put this one in, pulled the jumper from the other one rendering it a slave and made the new HD the master.

Windows recognizes the new one, even lists it as primary, yet it still boots it up to this drive and the old windows. It doesn't show up under My Computer, but it does under device manager. What do I do? It's all hooked up but I can't do anything with it.

Does the position of the ribbon matter at all?  I mean its configured under BIOS, the new Samsung is listed as primary and my old maxtor is listed as secondary.  :mad:  I'm frustrated.

Sorry, like I said I'm pressed for time, but it's cool.  I've located the Disk Management and I'm creating partitions so I think I got it.  I won't argu e if you want to move it tho :tongue2:

I've never had problems installing hard drives, so I don't really know how to help you. All I've ever done is set the jumpers correctly and if I remember correctly, the master drive is supposed to be connected to the top connector on the ribbon. It's been a year or so since I've installed a hard drive so I'm kinda fuzzy on details, and like I said I never had problems anyways.

Well with SCSI the ribbon placement doesn't matter, only the jumper location. I got this, I just forgot to format it and make the partition. I assumed I could just go to My Computer and right click>format. I just did a google though and found my answer.

Believe or not, the ribbon position DOES matter in some cases. Being a computer tech, you see a bunch of weird and flaky shit. I've worked on Compaq's that had to have certain hardware on certain IDE cable connections. Damn Compaqs.

But yeah, don't expect to use a HD unless you format it and create a partition(s) using either FDisk or the XP CD. :grin:

I'm guessing once it's formatted it will then load first, (even though it's listed as first, it wasn't formatted so I'm hoping that did it)

I'm tryin to get XP pro on there  fuck the home edition :rockon:

Yeah I did and it still loaded the other one first.  Like I said though, it had to be reformatted before My Computer picked it up.  It's all good now :thumbup:  I got like, 600GB total now :grin:

Damn that's way more than what I'd ever need.

I've got two 80GB HDs running in a RAID 1+0 array. One is an SATA HD and the other is an IDE running on the parallel IDE port. I need to back up my shit one of these days because if one of these suckers dies, I'll lose everything. =X

I'm always on Demonoid though,  I do a lot of multimedia work too and those programs take up serious space.  Plus it'll be nice having my own hidden and locked partition on my old drive for porn.  :whacker:  This oughtta be good for a few years. :laugh:

I've got about 500 GB total. I have well over 200 GB in music alone. THat and all of the porn, I definately need at least the 500 GB.

LOL  I just picked up a fat stack of some DVD-R's too, I usually just archive the porn on there.  Pretty convenient :grin:

I'm surprised, at Staples a 50 pack was only like $28.  When I first got into copying DVD's they used to be $2-$3 a disc lol.

your new harddrive didnt have a boot record.
so your bios searched other drives & booted your old one.

just to play it save, when installing a new HD,
dont plug in the slave drive until everything
formatted & installed.

Is your new hard drive a IDE or SATA? I believe SATA hard drives are always recognized by Windows as the primary drive, no matter what the jumper setup is of the IDE. There is a way to ghetto rig this, I did it to mind but draw a blank as of now

Why don't you just unhook the one you want to be a slave and hook that one back up once you have formatted, created a partition, and installed windows on your ideal primary?
