How do you feel about home schooling????

i found this article while reeding the news on the net....

In 2001, a veteran middle school science teacher in New Bedford, Mass., used the same needle to prick the fingers of two dozen seventh-graders to make blood slides for class. (The teacher retired before school officials learned of the gross breach of blood-safety procedures, and subsequent tests revealed no problems.) In September 2006, a first-year teacher at Salina South High School in Salina, Kan., used the same lancet on more than 20 students in her anatomy and physiology classes, thus violating not only blood-safety rules but system guidelines against using real blood for class work. All students were tested, and results were pending at press time.

so i think i want to home school my kids (when i have them) at least at home i know that no one dumber than me is teaching my kids....oh and they will be able to play tag if they want to...

It's awesome for so many reasons and few drawbacks. My partner was home schooled and is homeschooling her boys at least for part of their schooling.

seen the spelling bee spisode of south park? i think that pretty much sums it up.

public schools teach kids to be kids, develope social skills ect.

wait.. let me get this right. You want to home school your kids because of this event? I wouldn't recommend basing a decision off of one bad event. There are always going to be bad teachers/parents/drivers..ect. Doesn't mean you should be scared for your child and not send him to school

I think school is an extremely important thing for children. They need to learn how to interact with others and how to deal with people they don't like. They make more friends, have lots of change.. and over all I think it better the child's life.. rather then being home schooled.

As far as getting poked.. wtf. As a parent.. you need to teach your child to use they're sense when being asked to do something by a teacher.

you know, i liked my public school upbringing, mostly because it afforded me the opportunity to do whatever the hell i wanted. i turned out ok...make good money, lifes good...but damn you really have to be careful lately about the school you send your kids to. makes me want to look for alternatives

a good friend of mine was homeschooled, and in my opinion he is quite well adjusted, friendly, funny, and smart.

i'd be hard pressed to differentiate him from most publicly schooled kids as well.

it narrowly sums it up. The attitudes of those kids parents were the problem, not the fact that they were home schooled. I had a few friends as a kid that I didn't go to the same school as.

Yeah...I went to a private school, it was right on a city block and not like a fancy school with gardens and high gates or anything, and I think I got a great education there and also a lot of exposure to a whole rainbow of cultures. :hippie:

I would preffer to home school. i would make sure they get plenty of soccialising. But schools are nothing more then a youth camp to keep kids of the street. I rather take care of my children.

Home schooling has the inherent problem of poor specialization.

If you are genuinely a great teacher, with all the proper certifications, a masters in education, etc., then there's a good chance your kids will turn out fine with home schooling.

However, odds are that you don't meet those credentials.

If you don't, then you would be better off working in order to ensure that your kids can gain access to teachers who do have those credentials. That doesn't necessarily mean a private school either, perhaps just saving up enough money to move to a neighborhood with better public schools.

You can always point to this bad teacher or that bad teacher, but think about how many teachers in total the average public school student is exposed to. Certainly there will be some horrible ones (and the teacher's union doesn't help this), but there will also be some amazing ones who are both talented and well-informed. Furthermore, few would argue that the majority of public school teachers were bad at their jobs. As a result, children placed in public school will (mostly) be taught by competent, qualified teachers, and some of them will be truly inspiring and motivating.

That just isn't something you can guarantee with homeschooling, unless you have gone through the same education and certification process as public school teachers.

i think 'the norm' is defined by what the majority do/are like.... so we're just changing the norm, not moving away from it :smile:

i am very strongly opposed to it. i feel that a child should follow a "normal" educational path of k-12 in a public/private school. alienating your child may make him smarter but will dramatically stunt his social skills.
i also think parents should be wary of having their child skip grades/ graduate early / go straight to college after middle school etc.

while i skipped a grade and did early graduation from high school. i managed to be one of the lucky ones and came out (what i believe to be) socially on par with people of my age group. this was however only after a grueling period of adapting in middle school, and intensive introspection/reflection of myself. i may be stronger for it now, but can see how if one didnt have a supportive environment to get them through it, how difficult it would be for them

but what if you dont alienate him...i didnt really interact much with the kids i went to school with. but with the kids in the neighborhood i would. and i turned out normal. you can still get them in little league and pop warner football, boy scouts...softball and girl scouts for girls, the list could go on and on...i mean the social aspect of it seems like it wouldnt be much of an issue.

there are plenty of kids in public schools who are still lacking in social skills and many that feel they are outsiders.
