New 'Mouse Shortcuts' Feature

Note: This feature was problematic and is no longer active.

I was inspired by Opera to build a couple basic mouse shortcuts into the Shroomery. I decided to borrow the functionality where you can go back and forward using a combination of mouse clicks. It can save time if you don't already have those commands mapped to extra buttons on your mouse.

To go back, you click the right mouse button, continue to hold it, click the left mouse button, and release them both, all in quick succession. Going forward follows the same steps in reverse. A picture is worth a thousand words, so take a look:

If you find it gets in the way you can disable it from your display preferences. I hope the majority of people like it though! :smile:

I forget what browser you use... are you one of those Konqueror types? I only tested in IE and Firefox since Opera doesn't need it and the Konqueror people can recompile the functionality into their kernel or something. :smirk:

Okay I figured out the problem. Firefox on Linux displays the context menu on mousedown, instead of mouseup. Since a function is attached to the context menu event (for IE compatibility :rolleyes:), it was screwing things up. I added a workaround, and it should now function properly in Firefox for Linux. When you navagate backwards the context menu will pop up briefly, there's no way around this since you can't tell if a navigation shortcut is being invoked at that point to block the menu. However, it doesn't interfere with the functionality. I also tested the script in Konqueror and unfortunately it cannot be made to work because of the way the context menu steals focus from future clicks.

Does this do the same thing as the back and forward buttons on the browser?

They don't work for me, but that is fine, I probably wouldnt have much use for it.

Here is a thought/suggestion:
Lets say for example I am reading this thread in WAF.
If I click the back button instead of the "Website Announcements and Feedback" link below, this post will appear as unread when I get back to the WAF forum index. I'd have to hit an additional refresh for it to become marked read.
What if you were to some how make it so that these mouse shortcuts would mark the post I was currently in as read and go back?

This is the reason I don't use my back buttons on the browser, I use the navigation links below.

Just a thought.

blinkidiot, you may need to clear your cache, I know Firefox can be persistent about caching Javascripts. I tested in Firefox 1.5.0.3 in Gentoo. Under Advanced Javascript Options, do you have scripts allowed to 'Disable or replace context menus'? If not, that's the problem.

You make a good point about having to refresh the post list to keep track of which threads you've viewed. I've updated the board so this is no longer necessary. It requires Javascript and cookies. Also tested and working in Firefox on Linux. So don't tell me it's not! :wink:

That's sweet Y. I avoided using the back button for the longest time because of that, but now it's fixed! I like it :grin:

This should save time for dial up users also, because it was always quicker to hit back than to reload a page when I had it.
