Monsters on cased straw
    #6177266 -

These were agar chunks left over after some inoculations They were thrown in a bag of wheat straw and cased upon completion of colonization.  I had to leave town for 4 days or so right as they started pinning.  Just got back and was rewarded with these mammoths.

I'm new to this whole thing, but I see a lot of discussion about the size, and monsters, and gigantos and all....but I thought the earlier smaller one were actually more potent? so the reason for growing big....is.....growing big?

right...makes sense....but then what about potency....eating a small one or a big one of lesser potency?  anyhow....I understand....go big or go home ... hahahaha

well generally people talk about the small aborts as having the higher potency. it takes alot of aborts to get a good trip even though theyre potent.

oic...but I have also read that harvesting just before or just after the veil breaks is the best time?? or is that not actually true?

that is true. but it doesnt have much to do with the size. veils break on mushrooms of all sizes so it might as well be large right?correct me if im wrong..

I always seem to trip just as good off my bigguns as I do my tinys.

I'd rather have the biguns, less to handle, pluck, clean up, and less crumbling when overhandeling when dried.

Plus it's a lot easier to shove one biggun in your mouth than 5-10 tinys.

The main reason for harvesting just before the veil breaks is so that you're grow area won't be covered in spores.  Normally, I would have harvested these mushrooms earlier but I was on vacation for 4 days.

Also, I've read about potency of mature vs. immature mushrooms and from personal experience can say that I haven't noticed any differences.  I do believe there probably is some potency decrease as they get mature/overmature, just like most organisms on this planet.  However, without a controlled experiment, it is hard to tell, especially for the home cultivator.

Cheers :mushroom2:
