Man died after taking ‘single ecstasy tablet’

A CORONER warned there is no such thing as a safe ecstasy pill after a man died after seemingly taking just one tablet.

Matthew Oxley, 28, of Timbrell Street, Trowbridge, died on September 3 last year after becoming ill the previous day.

At an inquest in Devizes on Friday, the court heard how Mr Oxley, who had earlier managed to kick a heroin addiction and suffered from mental health problems, had started to have difficulty breathing and began drinking excessive amounts of water.

His friend Fungus Badder, who lived in the flat next door, said in a statement: "He said he couldn't breathe and had something spiky stuck in his throat.

"He was wandering in and out saying he felt really ill and then started saying he felt like he was dying. He looked like he was having panic attacks. His top was wet as if he'd spilt water trying to drink as much as he could."

Mr Badder persuaded his friend to go to see a GP and he then went to Trowbridge Hospital, where his condition worsened.

He was taken to the Royal United Hospital, Bath, where he was found to have brain swelling and very low sodium levels, both characteristics of ecstasy-related conditions.

Mr Oxley had previously complained to a doctor he had taken a bad pill' but Home Office pathologist Dr Hugh White, who carried out the post mortem examination, said there was no distinction between a good or bad ecstasy tablet.

"There are numerous examples of people having taken ecstasy and having no effects and people who have taken one and died," he said.

"I'm not aware that a bad e' causes problems a good e' doesn't. It's the ecstasy itself that causes the problems."

He said there was no trace of ecstasy found in Mr Oxley's urine but said this was probably because it was so diluted due to the amount of water he had drunk.

"The findings strongly suggest this is an ecstasy-related death because of the brain swelling caused by the behaviour produced by taking the drug," he said.

Recording a verdict of non-dependent drug abuse, coroner David Masters said: "We can conclude that Matthew died from ecstasy toxicity.

"We don't know when or how many but there is reference to a singular tablet and Dr White says one can do the damage.

"A good e' can do the same as a bad e', there is no distinction. It may be just one tablet but there is no safe level."

After the inquest Mr Oxley's father Norman, from Frome, said his son's death had been a sad and tragic accident.

"Matthew was a softie. If someone offered him something, whether it was for money or not, he would take it. He may or may not have been looking to take that pill at that time. We'll never know why he took it at that moment," he said.

"If he was looking for it and hadn't got it from one person he would have got it from another."

"When we spoke on the phone the day before he died he seemed happy with our arrangement to meet the following week. It's very sad."

Wow.  I never knew brain swelling and very low sodium levers were directly caused by MDMA.  :rolleyes:

Oh, so we are back to WATER being the issue...

Complete bullshit.  Just because some people are allergic to peanuts and die from eating peanuts does not mean that there is no safe level for peanuts.  Just because one person died indirectly from MDMA does not mean that there is no safe level for MDMA.  Typical anti-drug propaganda.

Wow, that must mean he had a lot of MDMA in his system!  Oh wait, they couldn't find any MDMA in his system... but they found too much water (low sodium and brain swelling).  Perhaps they should have recorded the reason for death as water toxicity... which is a real, and does happen.

The guy drank himself to death (on water).  Perhaps it was the MDMA, perhaps it was the mental illness, perhaps it was something else... but WATER was the direct cause of death, regardless of the indirect cause (that led to the drinking of all the water).

He diluted his system with water. This would make for a good Gatorade commercial. "It's more than just water." Sodium and potassium are ridiculously important.

I find it funny that ecstasy toxicity is the cause of death yet there isnt a trace of it in his system.

I don't find it funny at all. The coroner should be ashamed. The cause of death, based upon the story above, is water toxicosis. Without being able to detect MDMA in the man's system, he is assuming that MDMA was in the man's system. Can the coroner prove that the man took MDMA and not cyanide or hemlock or heroin or methamphetamine? Any reference to MDMA, other than inconclusive, is speculative. This is what happens when politics is allowed to influence science and medicine. Highly unethical.

Somebody please drag Dr. Hugh White into the street and shoot him in the head. There is a disproportionate number of deaths caused by the drug war on our side than there are on their (propagandists') side. We need to even up the tally. What a load of bullshit.
Seuss is right on the money - if he died from MDMA toxicity, there has to be traces of it in his system. Sounds much more likely it was water overdose from the symptoms.
The problem that prohibition has given us is that we don't know whether that MDMA pill really has MDMA in it (one of the reasons I stay away from it). If all these drugs were legal, there would be strict controls and you could be sure that what you're buying is what you're getting.

the true toxicity, and subsequent death level of mdma is as I remember 10 grams; or 100 damn good quality pure pills.

The war isen't on drugs... the war is on the causes that influence people to abuse drugs. drug-abuse is a by-product of the system and much like radioactive waste occurs from utilizing nuclear power, drug addicts with drug-problems will need to be properly disposed of, like the decaying radioactive waste produced from nuclear energy. -i2ancid
