BABY TAKES ECSTASY PILL Jul 8 2003
10-month-old swallowed deadly drug Charlie Gall
A BABY boy was in hospital last night after swallowing an ecstasy tablet.
The 10-month-old tot's mum rushed him to her local police station when she suspected he had taken the potentially lethal drug early on Sunday.
Officers in the fishing port of Banff immediately took the mother and baby to nearby Chalmers Hospital.
The child was later transferred by ambulance to the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, where he was said to be recovering last night.
A spokeswoman for NHS Grampian described the little boy's condition as "satisfactory".
Police are still investigating how the baby came to swallow the pill. They said a 21- year-old man had been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with the incident.
The man has not been arrested and is not thought to be the baby's father.
The mother's relatives refused to speak to the media yesterday and asked that no further details be released. The child's identity is known to the Daily Record but we have chosen not to name him.
In October last year, the two-year-old daughter of film stars Jude Law and Sadie Frost was treated after swallowing part of an ecstasy tablet at a children's party.
Iris Law had her stomach pumped and underwent a bran scan but suffered no lasting effects.
Only last month, a Glasgow mum snatched a bag of pills from her two-year- old daughter's hand after a plumber dropped them in her house.
Lorraine Campbell, 29, of Anniesland, thinks the tablets were ecstasy and could have killed her daughter Hannah. Police are investigating.
Ecstasy is a class A drug, mainly used by clubbers. It is both a stimulant and a hallucinogen.
It can cause a sharp increase in body temperature, leading to muscle breakdown and kidney and heart failure.

Better yet, if the drug were made legal, the pills would come in child proof containers and we wouldn't have this worry anymore. I fail to see how this is any different than when babies get into asprin or drain cleaner.

BABY BOY IN ECSTASY SCARE SHOULD MAKE FULL RECOVERY
09:00 - 09 July 2003 A Baby who swallowed what is believed to be an ecstasy tablet has been discharged from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The 10-month-old boy from Banff was admitted to the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital on Sunday.
He is believed to be one of the youngest in the country to have swallowed the drug.
A hospital spokeswoman confirmed yesterday that the baby had been discharged.
It is believed the baby is back in Banff but yesterday his family declined to comment.
Aberdeenshire Council social services also declined to say if they would be involved.
A council spokeswoman said: "Because of client confidentiality, we cannot comment on individual cases and we cannot comment on whether or not people are using social work services.
"The social work service has an established protocol when it comes to working with other agencies and we would respond promptly to any referrals made to us by these agencies."
The baby is believed to have swallowed a pill, thought to be ecstasy, after picking it up from a table early on Sunday following a family birthday party on Saturday night. His mother took him to Banff police station and officers then accompanied them to Chalmers Hospital, Banff. The child was later transferred to hospital in Aberdeen.
Grampian Police said that a 21-year-old male had been charged and a report would go to the procurator fiscal.
