INCUBATION HESITATION

)Ok, this may be a stupid question, but im very broke right now and am building an incubator.  I have no fish tank heater nor the funds to get one. I did however find an electric blanket laying around. has anyone ever toyed with one of these? possible electric shock? something tells me wrapping and covering the jars in sheet of wires isnt good. I figure if i use the same tub in tub method as used with an aquarium heater (without water :smirk:),I'd just need to find a setting that keeps the chamber at 80F. Any answers, ideas, or comments would be be appreciated. (besides getting a fish tank heater, ill get one soon enough)

If you dont have the money to spend on an incubator, then dont. I dont use and incubator and just keep my jars in a box at room temp. They colonize just fine,

if you REALLY feel the need for an incubator, wich I don't use one and everything works fine.
Put an electric heater in a closet, and heat the closet. Just watch the electricity bill, those things cost as much as a standard nowdays PC to keep running. (500-1000watts)

500-1000 watt electric blanket?  more like 50-100... very large ones might be a little over 100... they just keep you warm they aren't meant to cook you to a crisp. :smile:

anyway after screwing with two shoddy fish tank heaters i found a small heating pad that is exactly the size of the bottom of my TIT, and keeps it at exactly 80 on the low setting.  its worked for many months that way without any electrical problems.  the water in the tit still serves to keep excessive heat from hitting the jars and to disperse the heat evenly around the upper tub.  it works fantastic.

your mileage may vary... if you burn something down i'm not responsible. :smile:  i dont think my heating pad nor your electric blanket are really meant to be squished against the floor under the weight of a full TIT.  hasn't caused me problems yet but i keep my fingers crossed and inspect it regularly...

whatever you do, don't wrap the jars directly in the blanket - there will not be very even heating that way, and if you use it in conjunction with a TIT at least test your setup with a thermometer for a day or two without jars in it - don't make them guinea pigs in your incubation experiment, get it right first, add jars later.

when all else fails incubate at room temp... or use the cabinet-above-the-fridge trick (its usually just right up there!) :thumbup:

that pisses me off that you use one of those pad deals cause i found one yesterday but the little bastard didnt work. those fit perfect. Ill see what i can do with this blanket cause im not patient enough yet for room temp incubations. thanks CC

well if you're not patient enough for room temp incubation you'll certainly not be patient when it comes to killing/contaminating your jars (bacteria will love too hot an environment) so use common sense and test thoroughly before you subject your jars to whatever contraption you come up with, a little time spent now will save you time in the long run... there's a pretty fine line between "optimal" and "problematic" when it comes to incubating.

I don't incubate either.... I have all sorts of jars growing just fine....



I just put my jars in a box no heat no anything, just a plastic box that cost 4 bucks.

edit: they aren't normally in a jumbled heap like that, i
just did that to show more jars colonizing

alright, i mad the tit system with cardboard boxes, separated by blanket of heat. thermometer reading comes out to 80 even on power level 6. should i go to 85? 84? 83? what's perfect for cubes? B+ spasifcly.

keep it at 80-82 for best results.

technically they grow fastest at around 86, but the metabolic activity within the jar generates some of its own warmth.  once you go over 86, growth slows again - but growth of contaminates is still on the rise.  its really best to give yourself the few degrees of buffer zone here, they'll colonize right quick (and also important: safely from a contam stance) at 80 :thumbup:
