Heating without Electricity?
    #2265386 - 01/23/04 12:10 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

For my first grow I was able to use a space heater to keep temperatures at a constant 85 F, but for my second grow I will be unfortunately without electricity. Are there any ways I can keep my incubator warm? I was thinking of using a thermos as my incubator, and lining the bottom with a warm towel and putting some warm jars of water in there. Any other ideas of heating an incubator without any electricity? This will also be in my furnace room, so it will be a little warmer than other areas of the house.

That's going to be hard (depending on how warm the furnace room is). Maybe you could maintain a process of heating water and pouring it into/out of a bin-w/in-a-bin incubator. It's got to be close to room temperature in the room(?).

P.S. Emergency blankets are great for insulating an incubator.

you could get some of those disposable hand warmers(they have bigger sizes),and put them in there.they produce heat for like 8-10 hours i think. They would get pretty expensive though after a couple weeks. At least place them as high up as you can, since heat rises this will help a little, during the day maybe you can set it in the window so the sun heats it,and like Che_Night_Soil said get some emergeny blankets.no matter what man its going to be a pain.Even if you use some hot water system or something, youll have to change it pretty often I really dont know what to tell ya man, good luck.

I am having the same problem at the moment, Currently I am boiling water then putting it in a cup and replacing it every 3 hours.

I have a digital thermometer and when I put the cup in, it get's up to 28C and slowly dies down to 22/21 in the 3 hours.

I am thinking of putting an electric kettle in the aquarium and put it on a timer then an extention cord. Anybody have any suggestions about this setup?

As long as you have room temerature, they'll do fine, it's just a matter of time, unless you're in a hurry. It's not a big deal just a few days.

Yeah, it wasn't really a huge concern for me, I just wanted to know if there were any simple methods for keeping the temperature up without electricity.

Also, will lower temperatures during fruiting greatly reduce the size of the flushes?

we talking jars here? just keep em on top of the hot water heater or try near the furnace. check temp with a thermometer first.

I don't know whether I fully understand your situation but I presume you have power, just you can't use it publically for what you want. If thats the case you should remember the myriad of electrical devices such as tv's, computers etc that produce heat.

You might also try a hot water bottle, which I suspect will be better than the cup and probably a bit longer lasting.

Lastly, in natural environments the mushrooms will not receive 28c constantly anyway, generally outside it may only be 28c for only 4-6 hours (peak sun time). The temperature will be significantly cooler during the night time. Although now that I think about it, the poo it grows in generates heat itself.. doh.

my friend always uses room temp and they work fine...

innoculated some a week ago and already 80% colonised (its WINTER)...altho he used a whole syringe on the 4 jars...but still...every other grow he did the same (with 1cc per jar)
