Keep some water by your bed and as soon as you wake up, take a good slam. If you have any, drink some whey protein isolate with water as well. Really helps.

I would like working out in the morning but I need to get fueled up first, otherwise I can't lift worth shit. I work at 7am and I'm a slow fucker in the morning, so it just doesn't work out. :frown:

Hey.

I am of the opinion the protein powder sucks. So.. I would say drink some water and get going straight off. Don't give yourself time to listen to doubts. =)

You will have to get yourself going. Perhaps go for a walk. Work into a run and get a sweat going. Stretch. Workout. Some other options are taking a shower or jumping rope. I feel that some type of warmup is necessary. Maybe just stretching and doing some deep breathing does it for you. You'll have to try things out and see. I personally feel that taking a walk is a really cool thing to do in the morning and I also think that running rocks so that seems like the best option to me.

Mornign time is the best time to workout. It gets your day started the right way. It's totally worth it to put the effort in.

Well... seeing as how during those eight hours of sleep youve been fasting, its rather important to get some sort of food into your body. Protein is a minimum. Just water and then exercising is bad for your body because you force yourself to work without the fuel needed. So your body breaks down its own muscle tissue (carbolic?) to get the nutrients needed.

If anything you need at least a protein shake in the morning, but best would be to have a decent breakfast (grains are important in the morning).

I had about a month were I was in the habit of getting up early and working out. That month of doing morning exercises seemed to give me more energy than ever before (in and out of the gym). I felt happier than usual and became more social and I even felt smarter and more confident. One thing which I must stress was that I always made sure to get plenty of water and food in me right when I woke up and my diet was very healthy (breads, fruits, protein shake in the morning, pastas and meaty stuff for lunch, and fruits for dinner with plenty of granola bars and fruits throughout the day as snacks).

A friend of my moms was getting some sort of bowl problems due to aging, and she ended up going to a nutritionist or something (this was in germany so it was medically covered and the nutritionist had a phd). The doc said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and is the meal that should have the most of your bread and cereals, lunch should have the typical italian meal (course of pasta and a course of meats) and for dinner you should keep it light with vegetables. The nutritionist also said that protein shakes are advised especially when you dont have enough time for a full meal.

Yeah, I considered my own advice and I think that you are right. It's good to get something in your system. You could always make yourself some eggs. They are easily digestable and simple to prepare.

Just keep in mind that it will wear you down if you eat too much before working out. Optimally speaking, you'd want to wait a little bit after you ate before working out. An hour or two is good.

Also, another consideration is how shaolin monks train. They wake up and go for it straight off. I read that they run, meditate, and train all before eating. I've also read that many people run straight off in the morning because it burns 300% more fat since you have no sugars in your body to be used as energy. That's why I suggested what I did before. Even if you are a weightlifter who wants to hold onto as much muscle as possible, I think it would be fine to let your body run on empty for a short while. I know that you can eat only 2 meals a day and still be jacked. You just have to eat alot. =)

I do aerobics every morning (one day off a week) and when I used to work out of the house I would lift in the morning too (nothing that major- just a couple sets on two different body parts 3 days a week).  The one thing that sucks about lifting in the morning is you are never quite as strong... at least I wasn't.  BUT if you get in the habit it is really great because you get it over with... so you don't have to think about it through out the day... and you have less of... "well I had a hard/bad/lazy day at work and I just don't feel like going to the gym."  etc etc
Once you get used to it... I think its a great time.  I was always into burning fat though... so you want to look at your goals.  I never eat before I work out in the morning... thats how I keep  my girlish figure   For a guy trying to pack on muscle you'll want a good carb snack at least before you go in.  Unless you are trying to burn fat while you build muscle.
Now I work from home so I lift later in the day.

All right, I retract my post. Keep an MP3 player on your nightstand and when you wake up. Pop on your headphones, brush your teeth (while getting absolutely pumped) drink some water, eats some eggs or whey protein isolate (low in carbs, calories, SHIT, very digestible protein and obvious source of EAAs) and hit up the gym!!!

I recommend WPI because you absolutely need amino acids in your system. If they're not there, there's nothing stopping your body from skipping calories, carbs and fat and going right for the meat and potatoes - your hard earned muscles.

If you're extremely concious about having a shake, buy some amino acids like Scivation Xtend or Anabolic Innovations Excel (same amino profile as Xtend, $10 cheaper per kilo). These products are a specific blend of 2-1-1 EAAs, these BCAAs (not a type) are great for keeping your body from going catabolic. Different ratio's of EAAs, like having more leucine, will promote anabolism a bit better. Eggs are a fantastic sources of EAAs. A few whites, maybe a yolk or two and you're set.

I'm obviously not too huge but when I'm doing cardio, I don't like risking my muscle. BCAAs give you a great buffer. They may be what's missing in your morning workouts. BCAAs used to taste like shit, but I recommend Scivation Xtend - Refreshing Watermelon. One of the best tasting drinks I've ever had. Anabolic Innovation's Excel product has the same profile, but it's from a lesser known company that I may be partnering with in the future.

Laura's offering some great deals at the moment. Try out the Excel or a whey protein isolate (I recommend mint chocolate chip). You can't go wrong for such a cheap price, and the Customer Service is great. The owner can't really afford to fuck his customer's over, but he's equally committed to providing satisfaction and getting you a good product without screwing you over.
