My mother used to work at a store where she and the girls frequently raided the bakery to satisfy their munchies with pie etc.

My father designed and then built his own yacht. He started with pen and paper, then plates of steel, then wood and screws, and as we speak he's kickin' it on said yacht in sunny South Europe with his second wife.

My grandmother from my fathers side struggeled with and conquered barbiturate addiction in the 1950s when they were the in thing to take.

My grandfather from my fathers side was taken captive by the Germans in WW2 and detained in a forced labor camp as a slave for IG Farben.

My grandmother from my mother's side has seen quite some poverty during her life and could stretch a penny to a wire if it needed be

My grandfather from my mother's side was a practical joker (that makes me one-quarter funny) one of his antics was to hide behind a de-gutted pig (tied to a ladder as they do during slaughter) and lure an unsuspecting neighbor closer by making soft strange noises. When he was close enough he slapped the gutted pig shut around his neighbor  :eek:

Both my parents came from Russia when it was still known as the U.S.S.R. They met here in America, and came here about five or seven years apart. Whereas my mother was one of few families to actually obtain permission from the Soviet government to leave the USSR and come to America by way of Italy, my father actually escaped the cold clutches of the iron curtain.

Though my father and I are often at odds, I'm always compelled to share his story with people, because really, it's a great one.

There is a book that was published after the fall of communism in Russia called The KGB's Most-Wanted, and it is made up of the final copies of the KGB's most-wanted lists. My father appears in there twice for anti-Soviet activities in his native Estonia. While in Russia he studied to be a doctor, and got that degree successfully, but knew all the while that he had to leave and get to America, the land of promise where the streets were paved with gold. There were some Russian peasants who actually believed this myth - that there were specks of gold you could pick up off the street. That is how closed off Soviet-era Russia was.

My father made a decision to leave, but because of his anti-Soviet activities (activist groups, protests, etc.) he knew they would never let him. So, he got a job as the ship's doctor on a merchant marine ship that had one route: From Russia to the Ivory Coast in Africa, and then back. The trip to the Ivory Coast was a long one.

Each day, my father spent hours working out while his shipmates drank vodka. Not to say he didn't partake in the vodka as well, but usually while they could all be found carousing somewhere on the ship, my father was on the deck doing jumprope to build up the muscles in his leg, as well as running laps around the ship. See, he was preparing for something.

When they finally got to the Ivory Coast, the men on the ship were only allowed on land under the supervision of one of the head officers on the ship, and so they all descended into the port there to do some shopping, get some girls, get some drinks. By command, they all had to stay together.

My father pulled one of the oldest tricks in the books. He pointed in one direction, and told everyone that they should "look at that!" And when they did, he summond up all that he had been working towards with his exercises on the ship, and he turned tail and ran. He ran his heart out. He ran until he couldn't see them any more, dove into a cab, begged the cabbie to drive him to the American Embassy, and once there, they welcomed him with open arms.

The next day the CIA flew my father to America and set him up with a guy who helped him find work, and gave him a tiny sum of money to work with. From there and then, my father has taken advantage of capitalist America better than any other immigrant I've ever met. In Russia his family was rich, but he gave that up, and once here, went rags-to-riches all over again. THough, he never was quite in rags I suppose.

I dunno. I don't respect many my father's actions since the time of that amazing tale, but I'll always be inspired by the actions he took to improve his own life.

Mother used to race stock cars and motorcycles when she wa younger
Father, convicted for a contract killing
Grandmother (mothers) served in WWII also worked as a welder at combustion in chattanooga
Grandfather (mothers) Fighter Pilot in WWII
Grandmother (fathers) School Teacher
Grandfather (fathers) Furniture maker, died prior to my birth

Great Grandfather (mothers) first injun to be a deputy sherrif of travis county in texas (now Austin Tx.)
Great Grandmother (mothers) traveled the chisholm trail, ate sardines and cake
one day and got sick, never touched fish again, First indian to sue the federal
government and win, her lawyer was fresh from law school, it was his first trial
case

my family has taught me that you cannot know who you are without knowing where you came from... want more?

My mother was born in Siberia, and moved to Leningrad when she was about 3 years old. Eventually she emigrated to Italy where she waited for a year or so before the U.S. finally agreed to accept her. There, in Italy, she ate sparsely and was mainly fed by friendly Hari Krishnas who befriended many Soviet refugees.

To chip in with family cold war experience: my uncle has guarded american nuclear weapons covertly stationed here during the cold war and on one late shift took a nap on the fin of (I believe) a Nike Hercules

My great grandpa got shot in the back stealing a loaf of bread. During Joseph Stalins rule of Russia. My grandparents had my father on their way to America.
My grandpa used to take a lot of pictures of his children, used to make them dress up in their nice Sunday cloths. now he gives them to his children on special occasions.
My father was a hippie kinda guy maybe more of as rocker i dunno. Cool weird guy, owns his own business.

My mother is a great women, all my friends have always admired her and me for having her as a Mother. Her parents were born here in America. Her mother taugh third grade at a private school for 40+ years. She taught many of todays wealthy children, ambassadors, business men, movie stars, etc.
grandpa died when i was five or so. His family owned a paper mill and founded a town based around the paper mill, they had the first newspaper recycling program. Now the town is more of a wealthy area no paper mill just million dollar homes. His parents had family ties to Johnson and Johnson. They were gentlemen farmers, didn't do it for the cash did it for the prestige, had a green house full of Orchids, burnt it down because he was a purist, He got sick of the way orchid growers where crossing plants and making hybrids. he didn't want his plants becoming adulterated. So he burnt everything along with all his cultivation equipment.

Definitely!

Blame it on alpharedecho's ancestor worship posts :wink:, but I really think its quite interesting to share this, and its a good thing to take these personal family stories, even trivia, into the 21st century.

My grandmother's grandmother (..) told my grandmother about how she as a little girl was regularly taken to the town square to witness the weekly floggings and brandings, while being educated about morals and virtues by her mother.

great great grandpa served in the civil war, he was a scout, he was also a
deserter, of course deserting back then was much different than today, he went
back home to plant the crops and again to hargest, in his time of desertion he
'lost' 3 bullets to which the army charged him 13 cents.

my great granmother often told storis of her years as a girl, the fish story was
one I remember pretty well, another was about a family friend named 'Big Foot'
Wallace, he and grandpa used to run around together, he'd come by and play
cards one night he brought by a gentleman by the name of Bill Cody, he ran a
wild west show, my great grandmother idolized this 'buffalo bill' fellow

since my great grandmother lived on the chisholm trail, she's seen her share of
cattle slaughtered, she also stopped eating beef, pork, rabbit, chicken and
squirrel were the main staples of her diet, I remember her old shotgun hanging
on the wall, I remember hunting rabbits with her a couple times, she was hell
with that old 10 guage, shot from the hip and could hit a gnat in the ass with it

for breakfast and lunch she ate pork, normaly bacon, she'd fix some biscuits and
pour the grease from the bacon over the biscuits, dinner could have been any of
the mentioned meats, she dipped snuff as well, and given that these things are
pretty unhealthy they musta been what killed her... when she was 93, more than
70 years of unhealthy living

she also had these yellow roses that climbed up her front porch, every spring
that put out the most beautiful blooms, they year she died, the roses didnt
bloom, a few days before she passed, she called my grand mother and asked if
her car was still giving her problems, ma'am maw said it was, my great grand
mother told her to come pick up some money and get a new one, ma'am maw did so,
she called her after she bouth the car and asked if granny would like to go for
a ride in it on monday, granny told her to come by and take her to church on
sunday because she wouldnt be available after sunday, she said she had other
appointments... she passed away on sunday night

Great grandpaw had a brother that was killed by a black man in alabama, so his
other brother went to alabama to kill 'niggers', after about 12 years of it he'd
had his fill and went back home to live. great grandpaw was bushwhacked in
austin and was shot in the chest, the bullet hit a button on his coat and
narrowly missed his heart, a piece of that button was left in him, it took
almost 30 years but that button migrated to his heart and killed him

My grandfather(on my dad's side) was born in Japan. His parents were Methodist missionaries over there. In 1940, he moved to Georgia to go to High School. There he met my grandmother. He's a theologian, and one of the smartest men I know. You can read the rest about him on his wikipedia page:

Incidentally, his mother lived to be 101 years old.

All I know about my granparents on my mom's side of the family is that they're Swedish and Dutch, and that they lived in Minnesota during the Depression. They both died when I was about 7 or 8.

My mom was born in Ohio, and was a tom boy as a kid. She was the black sheep of the family. Her family was all Republican and conservative Christian, but she became a hippie when she went to college. After college, she moved to California and became a ski bum for a few years. She met my dad in San Diego through a dating service. She's worked with computers for most of my life.

My dad's family moved around a lot when he was growing up. He even got to live in Germany for a couple years. Although he was involved in the anti-war movement in the 60's, I don't think he would technically count as a hippie. He's very straight-edge. He apparently only tried beer once when he turned 21, and maybe smoked a joint or two in college, but that's it. He's worked as an attourney for the California State Water Board for all my life, and is currently Chief Counsel.

Okay, first you have to understand the set up of my immediate family.....

I have my Mudder and my Step-Dad (deceased): My mom, from Newfoundland, (who has 18 siblings) is your classic white version of Aunt Jemima. Loves to bake, would rather be in the home with the family, than out. Everyone that knows her, says she's got to be the best Mom ever. You really could talk to her about anything! My step-Dad, whom I miss dearly, was a Metis Indian from Manitoba. He taught me to play my bass guitar. He loved UFO's, Johnny Cash and kitchen parties, which I think is why he was such a good partner for my Mom.

My Dad and My Step-Mom: My Dad, also from Newfoundland, (has 14 siblings) is a musician. He started playing in pubs and legions when he was 13 years old, with permission notes from the liquor board allowing him in to gig, because he was working to make money for the family. When I was little, he told me "you got a voice, you're gonna sing." and I have been ever since. He took me to a studio on my 9th birthday for my first recording! My Step-Mom (Saskatchewan) was adopted. I put her through hell for years. She hasn't had it easy either, but she's a strong woman, who I have much respect for. She stood by my Dad through his Crack addiction and cleaned him up, and is still by his side. And she never put up with my shit, thankfully, or who know's where I'd be today.

Our family is huge. We tried to put together a family tree, but we literally need an entire wall to sort it all out.

I myself have 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Not to mention many step-siblings and in-laws.

Haha. There's absolutely no interesting stories behind my family, so far as I know.
My mom's family moved here from Holland in the late 1940's - just after the official end of WWII - and have been here since. They opened up a convenience store which they kept for about 20 years - the mid 50's to the mid 70's - and managed to make enough income to support 5 children, retire fairly early, and still hold a commendable amount back to this day. My grandma on her side is still alive, though I see her quite rarely. Usually when she comes by, it's to drop off some silly oddities she found in a garage sale that she wanted us to have.
My mom, who is now 53, is a... good artist? She was a really big hit and much more successful about 20 years ago. She has since applied for false disability and runs completely off welfare and the  meager income she gets from the occasional poster, portrait, sign, window painting, etc.. (If you couldn't tell, I don't have a terribly large amount of respect for her... for what I think is good reason.)
My dad moved here from Jamaica with his family when he was 9 years old - which I believe works out to 1975. It's a really dull tale. They just decided they wanted to be somewhere wealthier and blindingly cold in comparison to their homeland. :grin: Today, although he discovered his genius in college and came out with president's honours after finally graduating at 37, moved on to be a gardener in an estate of no real importance. He also takes a lot of side jobs and it usually leaves him working 6 days a week.
And the most interesting thing about the story is the disgusting fact that my mom is 11 years and 1 day older than my dad.  :lol:

When I was young morals used to come at the end of He-Man episodes but I guess the sight of someone being branded on the hands and then the forehead for being a thief retains a morality lesson better than halfnaked musclemen riding around on battle-cats :wink:

Not to say that I grew up immoral. much. that people know about. :grin:
