Hmmm...some help? (with job hunting...as in how?)
    #6052991 -

So I'm supposed to go job hunting today. To be honest, I'm not sure where to start. Can anyone give me a directional push? I mean, do I just compile a list of numbers of places I'd like to work (nursuries and other plant type places) and then call them up and ask if they're hiring? Should I write down addresses and go talk in person? That'll mean lots of driving and I'm low on gas.

What is the best way to job hunt? I'm getting anxiety just because I'm not sure where to begin.

Well you could go the internet route, and I'd say take a look at austin.craigslist.org and your local papers, or you could simply beat your feet and walk the pavement looking for help wanted signs.

Have you combed the classifieds? It's tuesday, so Sunday's paper is still a good bet for you.

yeah.. i dont know anyone who would hire/ interview over the phone.. id go around.. high volume areas, pick up applications, fill them out, and hand them into managers.

idk it took me about a week to land my current job that i started about 2-3 weeks ago.

persistance to.. if they say they are going to call you back.. and they dont.. call them.

Okay, good point about the classifieds. I guess I'll start there.

I'll use what little gas I have left to drive around and apply to various locations and then use my bike or walk.

I can't recommend craigslist enough, MOTH.

For sure, I've landed plenty of gigs through CL.

Should I look at all the ads for the past week? How far past the current date should I entertain possiblities for? I guess it depends.

I'd go as far as last week or maybe farther depending on the position...remember, it can NEVER hurt to send them a letter and try.

Okay...thanks for the help.

I suppose showing up for an interview covered in body paint will complicate matters.

But fuck.  It's AUSTIN.  I should be able to get away with that here, if anywhere.

Doing something that will benefit the environment sounds fun.

Non-profit or whatever

Make a resume, take it in, fill out an application, attached to the resume, and talk to the manager..give a nice short shpeal delivered with a friendly smile and set your intentions on the job you want..it always works for me!

Hmm...I didn't even consider a resume.

The thing is, I could go and get a job immediantely with dog grooming. We're in high demand. But I can't stand grooming dogs. I''m even considering restaurant work as opposed to what my skill is in.

Maybe I need a new skill. Okay, make a resume, get a part time job asap...and then find a new skill.

What skill doesn't take that long to train in?

I think I'm going to call these nonprofit people. 300-500 a week. But I basically have to walk around informing total strangers about what's going on with the environment. It'll be a challenge, but maybe a fun one.

hokay

Figure out what you wanna do.

Look in the yellow pages and start calling these buisnesses.

Look in the News papper, Highlight what looks appealing start calling.

Drive around and stop in and ask, Hey are you hiring?

Resturants always need help.

Ever think of dancing?

Well, I've never had to make one.  Dog grooming for Petsmart doesn't really require a resume.  Just a dog to groom.

try the local union halls, where I live its hard to find a job that pays more than 8 bucks an hour but all of the union halls start at about 3 times that.
even something as simple as a union labor job pays about 20/hr here
plus you can pick which jobs sound better or are closer to home

good luck

My girlfriend gets paid 14 an hour to walk around and take Polls in her city.
She asks a few questions, informs the people about what is going on with the politics and the elections. Tells the people that if you vote for this guy we will get new shopping malls if we vote for this guy we will get a better enviroment.

Its nation wide. I will figure out who it is she works for.
