somewhat rare mushroom find -- Rhodotus palmatus
    #6042273 -

Just found this babe about an hour ago on a hunt near my home in SW Ohio.  It's really quite a beauty.
My batteries died along the walk, so I didn't get a picture in its natural habitat.  I spied it while walking on a bridge on my way out.  It was growing from a felled hardwood about 15 feet from a creek.

Here's a link to  Mushroom Expert.com  ...Mushroom's Demystified didn't have any info on it

Does anybody here want to study it?
Or know anybody else that would?

Well, hopefully this weekend I can hit the woods again and check out that log. When I plucked the mushroom, I noticed quite a few small bumps of tough-looking, yet maybe fuzzy, white mycelium next to this lone soldier.

Habitat picks are in order!!

Thanks for the compliments YESSUP and CureCat.

This is definitely my coolest find since I began my love affair with mushrooms this year!

That is an amazing find. It grows on hardwood so it should be cultivatable. I'd be interested in checking it out and attempting a fruiting.

Workman, if you are interested in attempting to cultivate it, I can send you a portion of the gill tissue, which is air-drying as I speak.

I also made a spore print overnight, but it's barely there.  The spore print is supposed to be pinkish, but on the foil it looks off-white   I'll try to get it to drop some more spores on white and black paper for better color comparison.

Send me a PM if you want to give it a go.

This morning I went back to where I found the mushroom, and in about 15 hours, the mycelium turned into this:

I'll check back once a day for the next few days to check on the progress.  If all those primordia turn into actual fruiting bodies, that would be an impressive collection

I also found a pin mold (?)growing on some Bleeding Mycenas.  Thought it would make a neat pic.
