Police: Arrest led to huge dope ring
Local task force helps confiscate pot, cash, guns

By Melanie D. Hayes
melanie.d.hayes@indystar.com

The arrest more than a year ago of a man at a Fishers park on drug possession charges led to the discovery of a multimillion-dollar marijuana ring with roots in Canada, police said Thursday.

Six men from Carmel, Indianapolis and Pendleton have been arrested on felony drug-dealing charges. A seventh man, suspected of being the ringleader, is a fugitive from Ontario, Canada.
Since May 2005, the Hamilton-Boone County Drug Task Force -- assisted by Indianapolis, U.S. and Canadian agencies -- has confiscated 220 pounds of "BC Bud." The high-grade marijuana from British Columbia has a street value of more than $1 million, said Carmel Police Maj. Randy Schalburg, director of the task force.
Police also seized guns and $150,000 in cash, plus cars used to transport the drugs, he said.
Schalburg said the investigation began when a Fishers police officer arrested and charged a man -- police declined to name him -- with possessing marijuana and cocaine in May 2005 at Heritage Park, along White River east of Eller Road at 116th Street.
Questioning revealed information about the large-scale drug ring, police said. The cocaine charge was dropped, and the man was convicted on the misdemeanor marijuana charge.
Because of the size of the drug ring, the Indianapolis Police Department's Dangerous Drug Section joined the case.
Police believe the local ringleader was Steven T. Klotz, 37, Carmel. He was arrested in the summer of 2005, Schalburg said, and charged with dealing more than 10 pounds of marijuana. He posted bond and is awaiting trial.
Brent Jones, 24, and William Allen, 38, both of Indianapolis, were charged with dealing more than 10 pounds of marijuana. Daniel Mason, 25, Indianapolis, was charged with dealing and possession of marijuana. John T. Balmforth, 30, Pendleton, was charged with dealing marijuana.
All are out of jail on bond pending trials, Schalburg said.
Police believe the Canadian ringleader was David Evan Aubin, 26, who is sought on dealing charges in Indiana.
He was arrested July 11, 2005, after he met with undercover detectives at 96th Street and Keystone Avenue and delivered more than 70 pounds of marijuana worth $322,000.
He was locked up at the Marion County Jail on a $1 million bond.
"The next day, a man shows up with $100,000 in cash in a briefcase and pays the bond," Schalburg said. "He was released, and we haven't seen him since."
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are helping search for Aubin.
An additional man believed to be involved is Bradley Polley, 50, Indianapolis. He's a 29-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service.
Polley provided local addresses on his mail route to a California drug dealer who was mailing packages containing "BC Bud," Schalburg said. Polley would retrieve the drugs from his postal deliveries and sell them.
The U.S. postal inspector general's office, IPD and the task force investigated and arrested him on a felony charge of dealing marijuana. He is awaiting trial.
Police in San Francisco and Minneapolis expect to make arrests in connection with the drug ring, investigators said.
The last local arrest came a few weeks ago, closing that part of the investigation.
"They do not all know each other, but they are all involved in the same network," Schalburg said of the local suspects.
"They all originate from Aubin and Klotz. This was a large network, with a large amount of money. Over several million dollars' worth (of sales) in just over three months -- that's a pretty large-scale deal.
"It's a really strong case, as far as being able to cut off millions of dollars of high-quality marijuana coming into town."

Dammit, why can't they lay off the beasters and go for more of that crappy brickweed that needs taken off the streets. "Dangerous drug taskforce" my ass...

I am sad these guys are in trouble due to shitty laws, but I am NOT sad some shitty beaster is off the market. That stuff should be piled up, doused with gasoline (since it won't burn on its own), and burnt. The resulting smoke cloud would probably not get you high, would smell like fabric softener, and unleash horrific environmental consequences due to the stored fertilizer content.

I totally agree about the beasters, but it's better than the fucking mexi-brick that is most popular in central Indiana.

I don't buy either one personally.  I get some really nice crystal slathered headies

Life is too short to smoke shitty weed.

Beaster?
What does that even mean?

Are you implying there is something wrong with BC bud..?

Beasters = BC bud that has been tumbeled and packaged and smuggeled across the border.
It's about of similar potency and quality as the mexi-brickweed, but it's only semi-compressed and still looks pretty (if you don't mind the good stuff having been tumbeled off)It usually tastes kinda blah to smoke as well. Usually ends up still being damp and leafy too. People actually still charge 300-350/oz for it like it's some headies.

schwag, mids, beasters, headies in order from worst to best. You may have some other names thrown in there (dro is common for beasters, Fire is common for mids/schwag, and Kind bud for headies)

I can agree with all that but fuck, give me mids anyday over beaster. At least I won't be smoking bullshit crackling, damp pot. The mids I used to get were most always cured, few seeds, and burnt to a clean ash.

Nice bud there

hahahahahahaha

$1,000,000/220lbs = $4545.45 for a pound of beasters.... I live in the US and I could get that for $1800...

I used to get bud from BC, high quality white widow, my dealer had 5 pounds flown in from BC every week. That was a good situation.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the fact that most of it is over nuted and burns super hot, or doesn't go out without effort, and is pretty harsh smoke, and leaves a soot ball of somesort in your pipe, instead of a nice clean white ash.

Its kind of a tossup between beasters and mids, but definatly "mids" are more worth it price wise.
Fucking shitty bud....

Yes I'm sure it all depends on your specific loco/situation. BC weed is generally pretty decent, ranging up to excellent, at least in Canada - although I haven't smoked in a couple of years...

I grew up in Seattle. If you know your geography, you know it's close as fuck to the BC. The BC has some amazing pot. I usually reserve the word "beaster" for high quality nuggets that have perhaps dried out a bit, or lost a bit of quality in shipping (as Eraserhead has pointed out). Still potent, and could fool many youngsters into thinking it's some kind bud.

I don't know why you'd want to smoke mids instead of beaster.... Unless the price difference is the issue.

The Beaster I've smoked was never "potent"
