Cops bust 'dial-a-dope' ring June 20, 2005 - canoe.ca
HALIFAX (CP) - Police arrested 15 people Monday in an effort to smash a "dial-a-dope" ring that has sprung up in Nova Scotia.
Police said during a news conference that the business was run by a ring of drug dealers who took telephone orders for crack cocaine, magic mushrooms, and other drugs for delivery to the caller's door.
Insp. Fred Sanford, a spokesman for the Halifax police, said the operation is common in Western Canada, but relatively new to Nova Scotia.
"The appeal to criminals is . . . developing the customer base from delivering the drugs," he said.
Police investigated the ring for five months, keeping watch on 10 different homes in the Halifax area, before moving in for the arrests.
Sgt. Rick Chadwick of the RCMP said the group was receiving and filling hundreds of calls each week.
"A person could call up and order the drugs they wanted and have them delivered to their home . . . It does involved quite a significant number of people," he said.
Dial-a-dope businesses usually involve a highly organized network. Many individual traffickers with cars and cellphones make the deliveries selling to customers right at their door.
Drug trafficking charges were expected to be laid.
Police said the people arrested would be charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine and ecstasy, possession of cocaine and ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking, as well as assault and breach of trust charges.
In addition to crack cocaine, magic mushrooms, and ecstasy, police seized several vehicles and about $30,000 in cash..
