..is XP Pro 64? Like in running 32 bit applications?

Totally. In fact the IE that comes with it is 32 bit.

Well, it comes with 32 and 64 bit versions of IE. The reason for the inclusion of the 32-bit version is a lot of plugins won't work with the 64-bit version yet. So I wouldn't say compatibility is perfect, many programs will run fine but some may have problems (for instance, PowerArchiver worked, but the shell extension didn't install. Daemon Tools worked, my preferrered front-end didn't.) System utilities such as antivirus and defrag are likely to outright fail until there's a 64-bit version. You also need 64-bit drivers for all your hardware, a lot of obscure or budget peripherals may never be supported.

Even if a 32-bit program works fine, it's going through the 'Windows-on-Windows' emulation layer which is fast but not quite as fast as running natively in a 32-bit OS. So until native 64-bit versions are released for your software, running a 64-bit OS will do nothing but slow things down. I ended up going back to 32-bit XP for these performance and compatibility reasons.

Personally I recommend that you wait until Vista comes out and makes 64-bit support mainstream. Or install Linux so you can build your own 64-bit binaries. But for now I really think that the only compelling reason to run XP64 is if you're bumping into the 4GB RAM limit.

I got a somewhat related question:

I got a full version of XP pro with my dell comp. I also have a gateway laptop which only has XP home.

I also have an XP pro upgrade which I got through my school's site license.

If I format the drive with the XP Pro CD (to get rid of all the bundled garbage I don't need) then reinstall XP pro. Can I use the serial number off the Upgrade CD? or will the comp still recognize the core OS to have come from the original XP Pro CD?

I dunno about XP, but a 98SE upgrade key would work. Of course, 98SE didn't have all the copy protection XP does, and it didn't "call home" to verify it. :justdontknow:
