yup, in my quest for the ultimate diesel vehicle i tracked down some bus suppliers, managed to get ahold of the right person, and they would be more than interested in donating some of the vehicles the would otherwise be junking for alternative fuel research :smile:

well the ones that i may be getting for free probably wont be road worthy, so there is the option of combining several of them to make one working one, orrrr....... what im really interested in doing. research.

i would like to find a mechanic to look over the vehicle, inspect the engine, and then run it on veggie for a few thousand hours, and than have it re-inspected to see how much damage is caused. also i would like to do a comparison of emissions between veg, bio-d, and diesel.

also trying to see if different heat levels in the veg will cause different emission levels.

im also hoping to buy atleast one of the good working busses they have for sale, and convert it, trick it out, and sell it. (gotta fund the reasearch somehow :wink: )

you should get one to be road worthy and convert it to a mobile home...
that's great publicity, people will ask about it and find out it runs on biofuel (or it could have some banner painted on it...)

So maybe you can use the other junkers to make one that runs? Or are you planing on spending a bunch to fix them all up?

well im going into the lot on thursday to see what is what. im going to have to get my suit dry cleaned for this :smile:

but yeah, there are a few options. from my discussion with the bus manager some of their older busses go sraight to the junkyard, and im sure that i could get these for the same price the junkyard pays them, if not for free.

There are however, some still road worthy busses. these are for sale from upwards of 3K.

in the end im looking to repair/fix up one or more and fit it with a veggie conversion, then re-sell it. but eventually end up with one for myself :smile:

yeah, im a fan of doing new stuff that involves a bit of ingenuity :smile:
im so upset as of lately though, i keep trying to buy a conversion kit for my current diesel car, and its impossible to get through to the sales people at grease car :frown:

Is this just for your own knowledge? I mean, what do you plan on doing with the data? Do you have a method for "measuring emissons"?

I'm sure that by this point you've considered all of the above, just offering some suggestions on a topic I know absolutely nothing about.

no im not going to go all out ken kesey style,

as for the measuring of the emissions im sure that i could have it taken care of at a private mechanic, or at one of the public facilities here in illinois.

i will make the data public, at the least with a Wikipedia page and report.

think of all of the school busses that could be run on vegetable oil, or bio-diesel. these things run every day for 9 months out of the year.

some research on them could go a long way towards getting some bus company to consider a conversion.

To convert that amount of WVO into bio-diesel you need a pretty sizeable setup that would take up a whole garage, maybe more.

not really, you can build a relatively small "appleseed reactor" for under $500. but fuck that
only a 70% yeild of fuel, and it involves lots of chemicals. id rather run on 100% veggie that wont give me any shit when i use it in the winter.

I would have guessed that diesel would have been easier to cold start as well.

Then again it doesn't matter what the hell fuel you're using if you give the engine a shot of ether to get it started.

ether will BLOW diesel engines. they have compression 3x higher than that of a gas engine.

but yeah, you see the kit i would install for the grease would be a kit with a heated tank, fuel filter, and fuel lines.

in the winter bio-diesel as well as vegetable oil get some what thicker, and Gel up.

now the heated kit for the straight vegetable oil (SVO) puts that oil up to about 150 where is flows smoothly even at 9000 feet of elevation and in a blizzard ( yes i tried it once )

plus the kit is a second fuel tank, i still start up and shut down on diesel, so that the fuel lines do not gell while the car is off
