Calcium Carbonate & Calcium Sulfate
    #5882177 -

Hi - How's it going?

Is calcium carbonate oyster shell flour? I know where to get that.

What is calcium sulfate (gypsum) and where can it be found?

Thanks
Shaq

Yes, calcium carbonate is oyster shell flour.

And gypsum can be found in DRYWALL of all places... just go to home depot, buy a small sheet of drywall (or ask if they have drywall scraps), take the drywall home, crush a piece of it into powder, and voila! Calcium sulfate!

Tums = calcium carbonate, but they also have DEXTROSE in them, as well as a preservative, so I don't exactally condone using them in a non nutritive casing layer. Sorry!

What would be the most likely large retail store to find calcium carbonate?

Home depot, Lowes hardware, any hardware store.

Yea I went to home depot and they had gypsum in to places, the garden section (In a forty pound bag) and the drywall section(in a 25 lb bag)So I just picked up a scrap piece and walked up to the counter and asked if I could have it,I made up something about needing to see how it measured up to the wall. Ha ha they said go right ahead so I got home and crushed it up,just make sure you take the paper off 1st.Good luck.

Yeah, the apartments I live in are replacing my bathroom ceiling (long story), and I've got a few scraps of drywall from that for free... I just put it in my food processor after I take off the paper and *CHUNK*BZZZZ*CHUNKCHUNKBLAMCHUNK*BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ* and it's done!

check this out plz, i bought some agricultural limestone and mixed 2 cups of peat 2 cups of verm and 3/4 cups of the limestone. now my litmus dip is still showing to acidic, but i'm afraid to add more limestone because the pourosity doesnt seem right to sustain the myc.  it just seems to sandy.

any ideas?  thx.

Get powdered limestone, not limestone grit or granules. The limestone flour is what we need for mycology because it goes to work right away. It's sometimes called hydrated lime.

I believe oyster shell flour is calcium carbonate... Hydrate lime might also be calcium carbonate. Calcium sulfate is drywall or gypsum

Calcium hydroxide. Here's a pic of the label on a 50 lb bag.

Ok stupid question probably, but if I want to use this casing recipe:

•10 units peat
•1 unit calcium sulfate (gypsum)
•1 unit calcium carbonate (chalk)

Where does Hydrated lime fit in - if at all - and at what quantity or ratio?

Thanks
Shaq

Yes, a teaspoon per cup of peat gives a good starting point. Sometimes you'll have to go as much as a tablespoon per cup of peat. If you don't have a ph tester, start out with a teaspoon per cup, but if you have problems with green molds, up it to two tablespoons on your next project.

Another trick if you're having problems with green molds is to use a salt shaker to sprinkle a very small amount of extra hydrated lime right on the surface after you apply the casing layer. This gives a high ph right on the surface where trich and other mold spores land so they can't germinate and grow. Don't do this after mycelium pokes through, only do it the first day you apply the casing layer.
