Police make major drug bust

CAMBRIDGE - Police are calling it one of the largest ecstasy busts in central Illinois history.
Steven Alexander James Bradley, 57, of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, was stopped Monday on Interstate 80 in rural Henry County. Bradley allegedly gave the Illinois State Police trooper permission to search his vehicle.
During the search the trooper allegedly discovered about 50,000 ecstasy pills that weighed nearly 30 pounds. The ecstasy has a street value of $500,000.
Bradley is charged with possession with intent to distribute ecstasy.
Rene Sandoval of the Quad-City Metropolitan Enforcement Group says it's one of the largest busts in the Quad Cities area.
Bradley was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in the Central District of Illinois federal court in Rock Island with conspiracy to distribute ecstasy (MDMA), possession of ecstasy and possession of ecstasy with the intent to distribute.
Bradley appeared in federal court in Rock Island before U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas J. Shields who ordered the suspect to be detained in the custody of the US Marshal pending trial.
U.S. Attorney Rodger A. Heaton said ecstasy is a dangerous drug.
"Ecstasy is a powerful stimulant that can produce serious psychological and physical damage," Heaton said. "It has become a serious problem not only in nightclubs, but also in the high schools and college dorms throughout the country. The disruption of this large shipment of ecstasy will hopefully spare hundreds of potential users the damage this drug can wreak."
The charges are the result of a joint investigation by the Illinois State Police, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Henry County State's Attorney's office.
Assistant US Attorney John K. Mehochko will prosecute the case.
If convicted of the crimes Bradley faces up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a fine up to $1 million.

If I received a dollar for every time I heard people give permission to cops to search their vehicle, I would buy Amsterdam.
