does anyone have any experience with maitake. if so can you please tell me about your technique? could i do it with rye grain?

Maitake is a wood decomposer usually grown on production blocks.
A production block is like a myco bag made out of sawdust.

Considerably less than the kind sac actually. I do have a copy of that book, a most wonderful book indeed. I sort of knew that it doesn't absolutely "NEED" a host tree, but I am wondering because when I found it was definately growing at the base of huge tree.
Considering the size of this enormous tree, and that the Maitake was growing ONLY at the base of this tree, and nowhere else in the woods...makes me wonder if some fungi can grow either saprophytically and/or mycorhizally.
That is, can a (particular) saprophite sometimes grow as a mycorhizal one?
