Putnam man dies in police Taser use 5 officers involved in subduing victim
By CHRISTIAN BOTTORFF Staff Writer
Published: Tuesday, 06/20/06
A man "suddenly stopped breathing" and died Sunday after Cookeville police officers shocked him with a Taser stun gun while scuffling with him, police said.
Officers encountered the man, Jason Troy Dockery, 31, after a caller told police he was acting erratically and may have ingested illegal mushrooms or some other drug, Cookeville police said.
Two officers arrived around 8:50 a.m. at a Ridgedale Drive home and quickly got into a brawl with Dockery, shocking him with a Taser, police said.
Tasers emit 50,000-volt electrical shocks to immobilize suspects. The Taser failed to stop Dockery from resisting the officers, Cookeville police said.
"Mr. Dockery struck himself in the head several times and continued to struggle," Cookeville police said in a news release.
Three more officers arrived and helped take Dockery into custody. Dockery stopped breathing while emergency medical personnel were treating him, police said. He was pronounced dead at a Cookeville hospital, police said.
One of the Cookeville officers who responded to the incident was Eric Hall, who made national headlines in 2003 after he shot and killed Patton, a family dog that belonged to a North Carolina family.
"We believe that all the officers involved in this incident acted properly and did nothing that contributed to Mr. Dockery's death," Cookeville police said in a statement last night.
The TBI is investigating the death.
Dockery's death follows an announcement last week by the U.S. Justice Department that it will review up to 180 deaths nationwide that have taken place after law enforcement officers used Tasers.
In Nashville, there have been two in-custody deaths after Metro police officers used Tasers.
The first was that of Walter Lamont Seats, who died May 27, 2005. Seats died from asphyxiation after swallowing drugs and not from the Taser, an autopsy found.
Patrick Lee, 21, died Sept. 24 after he was shocked up to 19 times with police Tasers. The unarmed man had been kicked out of a downtown nightclub.
The Metro medical examiner ruled that Lee died from "excited delirium." He had marijuana and LSD in his system, and he had an enlarged heart, the medical examiner said.
In the 2003 incident involving Hall, Cookeville officers stopped the North Carolina family's van, based on a report that turned out to be incorrect. The officers ordered the family out of the car at gunpoint and handcuffed them. Hall shot Patton when the dog ran out of the family's car.
The action was captured by a video camera in a state trooper's car. The footage was broadcast on national news programs after the New Year's Day incident.
Hall did not return a telephone call to Cookeville police headquarters last night seeking comment. •

Sad...
"Mr. Dockery struck himself in the head several times and continued to struggle," Cookeville police said in a news release."
"One of the Cookeville officers who responded to the incident was Eric Hall, who made national headlines in 2003 after he shot and killed Patton, a family dog that belonged to a North Carolina family."
It REALLY doesn't seem likely that he'd be beating himself in the head, whilst getting tased by cops. ALSO one of the cops made national headlines for murdering a families dog. That cop sounds like a cold-blooded killer.
Cops are but gangsters.

Yeah right... he beat himself up...

Uh... they f#$%ing tased the dude... how can this shmuck pretend that the officers "did nothing that contributed to Mr. Dockery's death". I am fairly certain that if police had not been involved, Mr. Dockery would still be alive.

Unfortunately, "excited delirium" is not a recognized medical or psychiatric condition. Excited delirium was originally a descriptive phrase coined by medical researchers to describe the extreme end of a continuum of drug abuse effects.

Not all cops are bad... but there are certainly some very bad cops out there.

Wow, I really hope I don't have to deal with Tennessee cops again. Now I have reason to be scared. Too much of this shit has been happening around here.
At least though, Metro's police chief Ronal Serpas tried to clean up the Nashville force some, and the Staties cleaned up their force.

Living in that area, I've had run-ins with Eric Hall. The man is a bonafide psycho.

before leaving for 'roo in 04 my friends boss had one piece of advice to give. Dont get arrested in TN.
Obviously you can see why lol. Poor guy, i like how the cops just grasp at straws to redirect the attention away from themselves. "Oh, we didn't kill him, he was on LSD and pot. Must have fucked with his heart." lovely.

Most cops here pretty much leave you alone, as long as you keep your nose clean and don't raise hell. There's always bad apples in the barrel though. Of course, I just smoke weed and keep to myself, so it's pretty easy going here.

I'd imagine he bashed his head on the floor or some fixture whilst convulsing. The police have stated that they did nothing to contribute and tasing the man counts as nothing so yes, he must've just bashed his head of his own accord.

Cops in nashville are funny. Ive never really had trouble with them and have talked my way out of a few traffic violations and small infractions like public intox.
I do remember an undercover cop following me around one of the clubs when I was rolling HARD. He kept asking me if I knew where to get anything, if I had any more, and if I would sell him some. I kept telling him strait up that I had nothing, I knew he was a cop, and he needed to leave me alone. I think he must have asked me 20 times that night for rolls.
