Deep vacuum for releasing polysaccharides?
    #5699696 - 06/01/06 01:32 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Just looking for comments here.

I understand that the polysaccharides are locked in the material of mushrooms like Reishi, and must be released to produce the maximum medicinal value. This is traditionally done by boiling. I visited a commercial website selling Reishi which stated they use a "high tech pressure system" to increase the medicinal value. My guess is, that translates to "pressure cooking". So, that's one thing to try.

I have another idea. First a question; why is it considered bad to quick dry Reishi? It's recommend that they be gently air dried. This may play some part in experiments.

Anyway, instead of applying high pressure, what about a deep vacuum? It seems like quickly pulling a deep vacuum would result in a maximum number of ruptured cells. This could be tried on fresh or dried Reishi.

Another thing to try would be to pressure cook the mushrooms, and then pull a deep vacuum as soon as you could get them out of the PC.

(I'm in the colonization stage of my first grow, so I can't test this stuff out yet, just pondering for now.)

???

I have no answer for you, but if you want to rupture the cells, an ultrasonicator will do the work best.
