Psilocybe semilanceata lookalikes..
    #5396218 - 03/13/06 06:57 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

hey, This is probably a stupid question, but are there any lookalikes for Psilocybe semilanceata? I know there are, but are they any that should be noted, if they are poisionous or somthing? I'm living in Nova Scotia Canada if that narrows it down at all. Thanks

It depends on your level of experience.. To some people various things can be a look alike - especially those first starting out.
In the past, I've noticed that people have commonly posted pictures of conocybe and coprinus specimens, thinking that they might be liberty caps. They can have the same shape and size, but with some research you can easily tell them apart from actual liberty caps. Perhaps even inocybes could be confused for them as well. A spore print (if not obvious from other features) can quickly separate them.
Taking a spore print is important. With that you have one of the important features needed for identification. When you find something that you suspect to be a liberty cap - be sure to do a spore print.
From there, you can eliminate a lot and find out a lot.

ok, thanks. But aren't Conocybes physco-active as well? According to the nova scotia government website they are.

That website has a lot of misinformation if I remember.

And only four species of Conocybe world wide have psilocybine in them. One is in Europe, two in the PNW of the US. Conocybe filaris is a deadly poisonous mushroom with amatoxins int hem related to the de3adly Galerina and Amanita mushrooms. and liberty caps are a fall to first freeze mushroom in Nova Scotia. They will not appear until late July or late August.
