vermiculite grades

Ii was wondering what grade of verm you all use for cakes. larger grade? finer grade? anyone have an idea of what might work best for the myclilium? I can only find a large grade of vermiculite at the local stores. only online can i find the finer stuff. I have just made some cakes with a finer grade of vermiclulite to see which works best, if any. last time i used a biger grade of vermiculite and it seemed to work great. any opinions?

I have read that you don't want to use the finer grade verm.
Since the finer will make the area harder to colonize.
I use a medium verm...and it seems to work really good.
I have read posts where people stick the larger grade verm in a blender and chop it up a bit.

Well finer verm holds more moisture....but larger verm helps with colonization speed. I use the "coarse" grade verm and I have no problems with my cakes being dry..

coarse means a larger grade right?. I swear I graduated high school!  :smile:~ now that Im thinking about it, Im drawing blanks

Both seem to work fine - finer holds more water than course but course seems to colonise faster.
However course makes a crap ramsey seal in comparison to fine grade

Believe it or not, I've stopped using the Ramsey seal and have had no contam issues.

Nope. I do however always inoculate over an ovendoor. I've probably lost 2 or 3 of my last 90 jars to green.
