Vermiculite Grades?
    #2360563 - 02/20/04 07:57 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I'm getting ready to run my first casing tek, I've got another week or two till my jars are ready. I've been searching the site and I can't find the grade of vermiculite (coarse or fine) to use in the 50/50+ mix. I've got a bunch of different grades I can get, so availability isn't a concern. Also, is there any advantage to sterilizing rather than pasteurizing? I know with straw you pasteurize to kill the bad micro organisms, and the good micros prevent contamination until the fungus starts to take over. Would the same be true for casings?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

For the casing, fine is better.

Yes.
Although some people swear by sterilizing their casing mixes and also have very good success.

fine will do but since you have options medium or large, large would be like 1/8 inch. i like sterilized casings, a little simpler than controlling the pasteurizing temp too.
