Add Bitmaps to Picture Gallery

Any chance of getting .bmp in there? .jpg, .gif, and .png are okay, but why not .bmp?

i may be wrong bu tthe reason i would assume is that .bmp uses alot more bytes than a jpg or any other. for example i just drew a line in paint saved it as .bmp and it was 93kb but as jpg it was 3.5kb. get my drift.

PNG is a lossless encoding algorythm. It retains all the quality of BMP, but at a reduced filesize. An analogy would be FLAC and WAV.

Even though PNG isn't efficient for high-complexity images like photographs, it's still much, much more efficient than BMP.

Why do you want to upload bitmaps? It wastes space and bandwidth.

Same reason as the other types. To display/share them.

The upload limit would still apply. I can waste just as much space and bandwith with the other types :shrug:

...but there's basically zero point. Just because the shroomery gives people bandwidth for free doesn't mean we should waste it needlessly. Use PNG instead - identical image, identical experience, identical sharing, less bandwidth used. You spend less time uploading, people spend less time downloading, the server costs are slightly reduced. Everybody wins.

*Identical* photos, one is more than twice the size of the other. I could have made the PNG even smaller if I'd used a higher compression rate.

Where's the need for BMP?
