need help, Air exchange

Now i am having the hardest time larning about the air exschange,
I am not sure why mushrooms need it( maybe if someone could tell me i could better understand and come up with a way of giving my mushies the proper love and attention)???
I have a 30 liter rubermaid growbox, i want to figure a good way to air exchange it correctly.
now i hard you can use a air pump (aquarium style) and run it in your growbox with it conneted to a timer (setting it off and on threw out the time is needed to air exchange)????
can some one give me a good idea on AIR EXCHANGE?
