A song and a story for noeticbuzz.

The guy in that picture playing keyboards is named Matt, and he's the lead singer of a local NYC band called RANA that is the most badass bar-band in the history of bar-bands...like a cross between Talking Heads, Neil Young, Television, and the more rock and roll, less jammy aspects of Phish. They are fantastic.

Matt used to have a problem, a coke problem, and was spiraling out of control, a couple years back. RANA was opening for The Brian Jonestown Massacre in LA and Matt, on the path to self-destruction, was intrigued by Anton because it was like meeting another version of himself, another completely self-destructive brilliant musician genius.

So he did what anyone in their wrong mind would do - he walked right up to Anton and kissed him very, very fervently on the mouth, just to see what he would do. They got into a huge fistfight and Anton was PISSED.

And thus, this song was born: Anton.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

Yup, that's who they're named after.  Nice to see a tristate Shroomerite can get the joke.  Great name for a band though, right?
