Black Gold Worm Castings=crap?
    #518892 - 01/12/02 10:01 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

No wonder I have had such failure with my first casing attempts, there is something wrong with these castings. Mycelium did grow in them, but VERY sluggish and never taking over, just spots here and there.

I tried pure wheat straw, and what do you know? Total colonization of a rubber maid bin with 4 inches of straw in 4 days! Then I cased with Coco Coir (I added 1 tablespoon of hydrated lime and a 1/4 cup of H202 to a gallon of distilled water, and moistened the Coir with this). Grew through in two days with about 30% covereage! Dropped temperature to 75 degrees, gave light, and fanned. Two days later no pins yet (that would be REAL amazing), but now I have about 85% grow through, and coming in real evenly.

I am throwing out my worm castings, vermiculite, peat moss, and oyster shell. From now on all I need is rye, straw, lime, and Coir.

Be careful of throwing out supplies, you never know when you might need them again.

Black gold worm casings work well. I have a great compost recipe for em if oyu want it.
It does take about 1 to 2 weeks to colonize but it;s worth the wait.
