I have wood

I'm willing to make a wager that noone here has cut or split as much firewood as I have in the past week.  Twenty two cords of red-hearted oak.  A cord is 4'x4'x8' (128ft3).  It's all stacked like this...



That picture is two half-cord stacks, so I have 44 of them.  Did the cutting with a Stihl 28" chainsaw and the splitting with a axe and a maul.  I'm going to burn about three cords this year, I think, because it's so green.  Next year it should all be ready and I can sell most of it.  I love the woods :smile:

I just found that image. Just for reference, I bet that amount of wood there is about fifteen cords. STILL doesn't match my woodstack.

How did you split it?
I have some logs that are a foot anda half in diameter.
Do you recomend a chainsaw for splitting them
I have a blade sharpener and plenty of gas

Don't EVER use a chainsaw to cut with the grain as a splitter does. I like hitting large pieces a bit off-center, maybe about 1/3 or 1/4th of the way into the wood and breaking off that piece, which usually looks like a thick shingle. Then I just break the rest of it up into a few other pieces. A big thick piece of wood, as were the oak logs I was using, comes to about 4-5 pieces per piece.

noeticbuzz - Nope, I actually found this in the state forest / game lands near my house. Any tree that is down can be cut and taken for fuel wood. I found about forty nice big oak trees, marked them with my GPS, then worked my way through the woods using a truck and an ATV to move the wood. Thanks nature, for the free heat.


Also, just to show my conservationist side, I planted twelve oak trees this year, small ones about 3 years old, around a friends property. In fifty or sixty years, someone can make some great firewood out of them.

they make chains specificly for rip cutting logs, they were made for chainsaw
mills to cut lumber, there are safe ways of using it, I usualy lay the log down
in a bock as opposed to on end, the buck allws me to keep the blade off the
ground and keeps the wood from moving, then I cut along the length...

If you lived anywhere near me, I'd buy 4-5 cords from ya. I don't like the blisters I get swinging a 10lbs splitter. That'd save me soooo much money this winter.... freakin' crappy 1970 gas heater is a waste of money. Like having a huge blowtorch in the closet... I don't like it much. I love having a fire in the fireplace though. :laugh:  Nothing like sitting down in front of the fire after a hot shower and reading.
